Supporting Reading Development at Home
At Trafalgar Primary School, students take part in a comprehensive daily reading program. Families can play an important role in supporting this learning at home.
Our main tool is Nessy, an engaging online program that adapts to each learner, helping them practise phonics and spelling at their own pace. Short, regular sessions (10–15 minutes, four times a week) are most effective.
Families may also choose to borrow decodable readers for extra practice, and we encourage everyone to keep up the habit of reading aloud at home; whether it’s bedtime stories, favourite childhood books, or even audiobooks through the library. These shared reading experiences help build vocabulary, knowledge, and a love of learning.
Finally, remember that strong reading grows from curiosity about the world. Watching a documentary together, exploring nature, or simply noticing the everyday can all spark language and knowledge that support comprehension.
We have prepared detailed advice for families on how best to support reading at home, including how to use Nessy effectively and how paper-based readers and shared reading fit in.

Update on Out of School Hours Care (OSHC)
This week, the school was informed with very short notice that OSHClub will not be continuing as the provider of Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) in 2026. Further, they expressed a wish to terminate their contract immediately.
Following urgent discussions, School Council has successfully negotiated with OSHClub to extend their services until the end of 2025. To make this possible, the school has chosen to contribute to the cost of the extension as an investment in supporting families and ensuring continuity of care.
While we are disappointed by OSHClub’s decision, it is important to note that OSHClub is a private business contracted to the school and ultimately makes its own business decisions.
The school will now commence a formal tender process to secure a new OSHC provider for 2026. We are confident that a new provider will be in place and able to continue this essential service in the new year.
OSHClub has also confirmed that they will not be offering a holiday program in the September school holidays. We understand the significant impact this has on families and acknowledge the frustration this may cause. Unfortunately, these decisions are beyond the control or influence of the school. However, we will ensure that our recent experiences inform our selection of a new provider moving forward.
To support families the school is sharing some alternate holiday programs delivered by neighbouring services:
We thank families for their understanding as we navigate this transition and will provide updates as soon as further information becomes available.
A Quick Reminder About School Phone Calls
When you receive a call from the school, please take a moment to listen to the entire voicemail message before calling back. Our staff members always leave detailed messages explaining who called and why they're calling.
Listening to the full message first helps us serve you more efficiently and ensures you're connected directly to the right person without delay. This small step saves valuable time for both families and our school staff.
Phone System Update
Please note that our phone system will soon be updated to include a recorded message with menu options to help direct your call to the appropriate area. This improvement will further streamline our communication and reduce wait times.
Thank you for your cooperation in helping us enhance our communication processes!
