Literacy and Numeracy

Congratulations

Congratulations to our Year 3 and 4 students who participated in the Prime Minister's Spelling Bee earlier this term.    Two students in 4L, Cesca and Tom, have reached the State finals. This is a great effort and we wish them well in this week's spelling round.

Children's Book Week Performance

To celebrate Children's Book Week this year, students enjoyed the musical adventure Treasure Hunt presented by Perform Education today. The performance featured a number of the CBCA 2025 Shortlisted Books.

It explored themes of sustainability and our relationship with the natural environment, as well as celebrating how books and reading create understanding and bring people of different backgrounds together.  Some of the concepts explored in the show linked to the Values we have focused on at St James this year; Inclusion, Optimism and Respect.  Our performers commented on the engagement of students and enjoyed performing for them.

Building Confidence in Maths Through Cold Calling and Checking for Understanding

This term, our students have been strengthening their mathematical thinking by engaging in cold calling and regular checks for understanding. Cold calling encourages all students to share their ideas, not just those who usually raise their hand, helping to build confidence and resilience. Teachers are also using questioning strategies to check for understanding, ensuring that students can explain their reasoning clearly and apply their knowledge to new problems. These strategies are helping students to think critically, collaborate with peers, and develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.
