Captain's Corner

Hello, Welcome to Week 6!

SCHOOL CAPTAINS

We have an exciting day today, it’s PYJAMA DAY! Everyone has been invited to wear their pyjamas or comfortable clothes to school. We are having Pyjama Day to celebrate our work in supporting the Malvern Emergency Food Program, and to raise awareness for those people in our community who don’t have somewhere safe and secure. We have had hot chocolates, and learnt about the different ways we can help support those in need.

Next week we have the Book Week Parade in the hall. Don’t forget on Monday to bring a dress up as a character from your favourite book. You are welcome to bring a book for the book swap where you can put in one of your books and get another one from the pile. We are looking forward to a day filled with activities about the different books on the shortlist for Book of the Year.

Hopefully we have all recovered from the production, everyone did an amazing job playing their role. A big shout out to the parents that have helped behind the scenes with the sets and the costumes - it looked wonderful and magical just like the show! Thank you!

On Friday last week we had the Dendy Athletics Carnival where people from 3 - 6 competed in all different events. Everyone did an amazing job, especially considering we had all just performed for 2 nights straight in our production. Congratulations to Wolf, Evelyn, Harry B, Emilo, Ari, Callum and Maximillian who have all made it through to the next stage - what an amazing effort!

Well done to all the star award winners this week

Enjoy your weekend!

ART

Now the production has come to an end there are a lot of tired faces in St Josephs. We had so much fun performing over the two nights and we are grateful for the parents who helped along the way! Whether it was helping us practice our lines and our dances at home, coming into school to create beautiful costumes and set pieces or just giving us support and encouragement to get up on stage, we are very grateful.

One of my highlights was ‘Be Our Guest’ because the Preps really shone and we all had a blast singing and dancing! It was a lot of work to put it together but it was so much fun to perform it! Everyone did a great job performing both nights and we thank Mrs D’Arco for all her hard work to bring the performance together. We also thank the teachers for finding time to help us to rehearse, helping with the props, sets and costumes and encouraging us along the way. We hope that everybody gets their beauty rest and can bounce back!

STEM

Over the past few weeks for STEM, we have been making a marble run maze. We have been using paper straws, icy pole sticks and masking tape. For the base we used an empty box of A4 paper and we had to add an entrance and exit. We have been challenged to add as many dead ends and tricks to fool the user! It has been a lot of fun to create these marble runs.

We have also finally started to use the 3D printer and we are all excited to see what we can do with it! We’ve only printed a couple things for now and it's really cool to see the print slowly build up. We are entering a really cool age of technology and it is really exciting to see all the new things that are made everyday like the 3D printer! I am buzzing with excitement as the future is nearing and so is other cool tech for us to find and use in the classroom.

We have also been doing lots of work on sustainability recently. And the container deposit scheme is going great! Even at home you can deposit your own cans for the school with the code C2000056397. We have also been doing lots of work on the secret garden and we’ve got lots planned as we come into Spring.

SPORTS

On your marks, get set go! We were off and on our way at the Dendy District Athletics. Select students went to Athletics day and everyone went really well and showed a lot of support for each other. The sport captains have been really busy lately with Mrs Birch. Next Friday, a small team of 7 Year 5s and 6s are going to the Lightning Premiership for Basketball. We also have Rugby Gala Day coming up with lots of rugby fun and a Disco too!

Even though the footy season is winding down for lots of people, we will still be able to wear our colours for Footy Colours Day on the last day of Term 3. We encourage everyone to wear the team we supports’ colour.

This term we have been doing a lot of exciting things in sport lessons, for instance we were learning how to play frisbee! It has been so fun because I don't think anyone has played frisbee outside of school and we love it when we have new guests coming in and teaching us sports we've never played. It's a great experience doing all of these new sports because everyone gets the chance to find some hidden talents. What we have been learning in sport is when you are playing frisbee you want length more than height and what's good is that its not very difficult so its fun and easy. Playing frisbee is something that I’d never thought I would do in sport but it is actually really fun and I can't wait to do more.

Last week we had Dendy Athletics Day. It was hard doing it after the production but  everyone did so well, and put a lot of effort in. Some people made it to Beachside Division - congratulations!

This term we have being doing some new fun sports in PE. We have been doing cricket clinics and we have been doing some frisbee. It's been so exciting learning some new sports like cricket and frisbee. I like playing cricket because it's such a fun sport. We have also been doing karate this term. It has been a fun term so far.

This term, the Yellow House Sport Captains have been really busy. Next week on Friday we have the Basketball Lightning Premierships - let me just say with some intense tryouts!  We have a really great team of 5/6s going - congratulations to everyone who made it! This week we have also been doing a really fun frisbee clinic for our PE lessons. We learned how to whip it and grip it! Just last week we had an awesome cricket clinic where we learnt how to throw a cricket ball and use a bat! Let me just say I would have never expected to be good at frisbee or have this many great clinics. We also have a Rugby Gala Day coming up with an awesome disco at the end with a whole day of rugby fun!
