After the most successful Olympics ever for Australia in Paris this year, let’s look at the Indigenous athletes that represented our country.
There were 11 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander athletes competing at the 2024 Paris Olympics. They were Caleb Law, Mariah Williams, Brooke Peris, Patty Mills, Taliqua Clancy, Marissia Williamson Pohlman, Abbey Connor, Connor Nicholas, Callum Peters, Alex Wilson and Maurice Longbottom.
They competed in a variety of sports including sailing (Connor Nicholas), hockey (Brooke Peris, Maria Williams), boxing (Callum Peters and Marissa Williamson Pohlman), 3 x 3 Basketball (Alex Wilson), basketball (Patty Mills), Rugby 7’s (Maurice Longbottome), athletics (Caleb Law), swimming (Abbey Connor) and beach volleyball (Taliqua Clancy).
Some of the athletes were first time Olympians like Marissa Willaimson Pohlman and Alex Wilson, while others have represented Australia three times like Taliqua Clancy or five times like Patty Mills!
The athletes come from a variety of Mobs including the Kokatha, Naghiralgal and Duaureb-Meriam mobs (Patty Mills), Taliqua Clancy is a Wulli Willi and Goreng Goreng woman, Caleb Law is a Wakka Wakka man, and Maurice Longbottom is a Dharawal man. There are many other Mobs represented by these athletes.
So how did they go?
Taliqua Clancy - favourites for the gold medal, Taliqua and her partner Mariafe lost their Bronze Medal match to come 4th.
Maurice Longbottom- the men's Ruby 7’s team also came 4th in Paris, losing to South Africa
Patty Mills - lost in overtime to Serbia in the quarter finals.
Caleb Law - current Australian Champion in the 200m sprint, Caleb ran in the 4 x 100m relay team where they broke the National record!
Mariah Williams and Brooke Peris - the Hockeyroos last out in the quarter finals to China, 2-3.
Marissia Williamson Pohlman and Callum Peters - both representing Australia for the first time, they got knocked out in Round 16.
Abbey Connor - made it through to the final of the 200m butterfly where she finished 7th.
Connor Nicholas - competed in 8 sailing races finishing 9th overall.
Alex Wilson - this was the first time 3x3 basketball has been included in the Olympics. Ally and her team came in 5th.
