Grade 1
General:
Grade 1 students have been interacting with their peers with increasing kindness, patience and collaboration in both the classroom setting and outdoor spaces. This has resulted in friendship circles expanding, students showing increasing willingness to play new games and practice active listening. With many exciting events taking place over the last few weeks, we have also had lots of fun with our special visitors during our Book Week celebrations. Students enjoyed having their parents visit for both our showcase and annual Father’s Day celebration. The Grade 1 teachers hope everyone has a fantastic holiday and well deserved two week break.
Mathematics:
Over the past few weeks, students have engaged in many open-ended tasks that have combined multiple mathematical skills into different concepts. Students have been given many opportunities to extend their current understanding in the areas of Place Value, Data, Location, Fractions and Time. In addition, there have been many cross-curricular connections throughout our units embedding our Integrated concept of Discovery and the Olympics. Grade 1 students have enjoyed engaging in student driven activities that have allowed them to use their creative minds to make connections with our Maths curriculum and solve problems.
English: This term in English, students published their final procedural text on Chromebooks as a part of their Book Week showcase costumes. We started with a Book Week celebration by immersing ourselves in the educational musical adventure called "Maybe a Miracle" by Perform Education. They were also inspired after meeting Vikki Conley, an amazing Australian author. Students made connections to a wide range of texts by reflecting upon their own experiences. In the last few weeks of term, students have been studying multiple famous Australian authors. They have engaged in the skills of note taking, making connections to a text and becoming the author by rewriting the text.
Integrated Studies & RRRR/Cyber Safety:
Grade 1 students have been investigating the five senses, connecting their learning to the Olympic Games. They have participated in interactive activities, including experiments with light and sound, creating Olympic torches, exploring visual perception, listening to the opening ceremony audio, and experimenting with light and shadow.
In RRRR this term, students have been learning about managing stress and learning different coping techniques they can use when presented with difficult situations. Students have also continued to learn about Cyber Safety and how to stay safe and make good choices online.
