NAIDOC WEEK CELEBRATIONS

During Week 7, we celebrated NAIDOC Week at Sacred Heart School. Our week started with a Liturgy centred around this year's theme - Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud. Throughout the week, we also celebrated Indigenous Literacy Day. This is a day to celebrate First Nations stories, cultures and languages.

Anita Heiss, an Aboriginal Australian author (who will be the MC at our upcoming ATSI Conference), received a notable mention from the Children's Book Council of Australia for her new book, Bidhi Galing (Big Rain).

Miss Maddie and Mr Hinch from St Francis Xavier's School, Narrabri, came to our school and generously donated their time to work with our students. Miss Maddie worked in small groups with the children, playing language games and teaching them the Gamilaraay language. Mr Hinch also worked in small groups, supporting the students in creating traditional artworks using symbols and dot painting. Mrs Ryan and Miss Langfield read the book 'Family' by Aunty Fay Muir to their small group. The children then had an opportunity to create a personalised family tree using gum leaves and branches. All children moved between the three activities.

Culture is the fire that gives us knowledge, wisdom, and purpose. It is our responsibility to maintain, practice, and pass on our fire to our future generations. Cultural immersion, such as the experiences provided throughout this week, ensures that our younger generations gain an authentic, deep understanding of First Nations people and their traditions.

QUIRINDI MUSICAL PERFORMANCE

Two weeks ago, all staff and students boarded the Minibus and travelled to Quirindi for their biannual Musical Production, 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'. The children had a wonderful time in the audience—laughing, listening, and singing along to the performance. Thank you to St Joseph's School, Quirindi, for inviting us to watch your magical performance.
