Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

Last weekend saw Marist travel to St Patrick’s College. It was a big day of rugby and football at Shorncliffe as they hosted all matches. On Friday night the 1st IV Chess team had an exciting 8-all draw, with our Senior A and B teams coming away with good wins. In rugby, we played last Wednesday afternoon due to the Queensland Schoolboy Titles being played over the weekend, with the team recording a comprehensive victory for back-to-back big wins. The 1st XI took part in an exciting game of football in a top-of-the-table clash against St Pats. The 3-2 loss was not a reflection of how well we played and with Marist, St Edmunds and St Pats all now equal first it is everything to play for with two rounds to go.

Cross Country

Good luck to our Cross Country team who head out to Curlew Park on Wednesday to represent the College in the 26th AIC Cross Country Championship. Marist has a long and proud history in cross country, winning 13 of the 25 events held to date. We wish the boys all the very best and thank all the staff involved in the program, led by Coordinator and Head Coach Mr Mitch Reid, Assistant Mr Marcus Schrader, and Mr John Lambourne, Head of Sport Primary.

Super Saturday

This weekend is the biggest event on the sporting calendar- the home round against Lauries. We are looking forward to really competitive round of sport across the three big sports this term against St Laurences with a number of functions and events planned to make the most of the day. If there is one week you play and you stay this is it. The 1st XI are in the hunt for the premiership, the 1st XV are playing really well and our 1st IV are up against their biggest rival on Friday afternoon. There will be lots of activities and plenty of great action on the field to keep everyone entertained.

AIC Rugby League Growth

Great news- the great game of rugby league is expanding at Marist. With the AIC introducing B teams in Years 5, 6 and 7 we will now have more opportunities for boys to play. Over the next few years this expansion will continue so that all year levels have B teams by 2028.

With this expansion, rugby league will now be consistent with all our other AIC sports in that uniforms will be purchased from the Uniform Shop. Once selected in a team boys are invited to purchase their jersey in preparation for the season. Similar to AFL, volleyball and basketball, each player will have a numbered jersey for identification by officials, which will be their unique number in the cohort.

Please do not purchase jerseys until the teams have been announced as no refunds are possible once the item has been worn.

Routines

As we get closer to the end of term and assessment pressure starts to build and boys are feeling a little bit stressed in juggling their commitments it is important to remember that boys thrive on routine. If you are used to training on a Monday afternoon then that is what you should be doing, even if you have an exam on the Tuesday. Exercise and fresh air are great stress relievers. If boys are feeling overwhelmed, please contact your coach and year co-ordinator in advance to explain why you are going to miss training.

Finish Well

With a couple of weeks to go I remind all boys playing football and rugby to maintain your discipline and focus on the task at hand. Marist men should not retaliate, regardless of the provocation, and should never be the instigator of poor behaviour. We win and lose with respect for the opponent, officials, ourselves, and the game. The AIC has some guiding principles in our vision as a competition that we want to “develop good and healthy young people of character through sport and competition within a Christian context.” This goes for spectators as well. I have received lots of positive emails and reports where our boys have done positive things, but one incident can paint us all in a bad light so let’s finish hard and with respect and dignity.

Student Achievements

Track and Field

An amazing achievement in Track and Field where four of our students have been selected to represent their relevant nations in the upcoming competition. This is a remarkable achievement that we as a College are immensely proud of. Congratulations to the four boys and well done to our staff and coaches who support these boys, including Mr Richard Graham (Director of Track and Field) and Mr Robin Martin (Head Coach - Track and Field).

  • Asher Parkin Australia u18 2000m Steeplechase
  • Isaiah Burgess PNG u18 shot
  • Jack Mahuru PNG u18 High Jump
  • Jonathan Kirk Fiji u18 Shot Put

Tom Cross - Rugby Union

Tom has been selected to represent Marist College as a member of the Met North 11-12 Years Rugby Union team at the Queensland Regional State Championships to be held Thursday 18 July – Sunday 21 July. This is Tom’s second year selected in the Met North team.

Ned Clifford - Netball

Ned as he participated in the first Met North team at the Queensland Representative School Sports’ inaugural Boys 10-12 Years championship in Toowoomba. Over the last weekend, 10 regions battled it out in fierce competition for the first trophy at the schoolboys rep level, which went to the undefeated Met West team. Met North took out 6th spot, and we’re very proud of the way Ned conducted himself on behalf of the school and his region in his first rep sport opportunity.

Hunter Harvey - Umpiring

Hunter has recently been officiating at the U15 AFL School Sports State Championships in Cairns. Hunter was selected to umpire the boys grand final at Cazaly Stadium between Met North Vs South Coast. He has worked really hard over the carnival, umpiring all 3 disciplines, 3 games a day and was rewarded for his excellence with being given the final.

Football

Mr Derek Lennon (Football Coordinator)

Last Saturday saw the football program travel to Shorncliffe to face St Patrick's College. With 18 wins, 4 draws and 9 losses it was another big day for the football program. The 1st XI were brave in going down 3-2 to a very good St Pats team on a difficult place to play. It was a quality match that could have gone either way. The result meant that Marist, St Edmunds and St Pats are all equal first with four wins and one loss each. We face St Edmunds in round 7 and still have everything to play for.

Team of the week goes to:

  • The 7ths had a great 6-1 win against St Laurence's 8ths and the 9A machine kept going with a 4-0 win against St Pats.
  • 9B who won 10-0 and 9D Black who won 9-0. Honourable mention to 5 Gold who in most weeks would be team of the week with a 7-1 win against St Laurence's 5D team.

This weekend is a big round for football. St Laurence's College are ahead of us in the aggregate competition and so a big effort is needed this week to take as many points off SLC as well can across all the 7-12 A and B teams. Momentum plays a surprising role in these things so all teams will play their part in making Super Saturday truly super for Marist football.

Come along and support your 1st XI as they hunt for premiership glory. There will be a raffle prize and Zooper Doopers at half-time for all student spectators present.

With two rounds to go, and we need to finish hard to make sure the work we have done so far is rewarded.

Good luck to all our Year 12s as you play your last matches at home this weekend.

Marist Rugby Union

Mr Richard Graham – Director of Rugby / Track and Field

Super Saturday – June 1st

This year’s biggest sporting event is here!

It will be an amazing day of school rugby union, entertainment, celebrations, prizes, giveaways, supporter’s bar………

Marist College vs St Laurence’s College in 30+ games of rugby union.

Old Boys’ Day.

Reunion Day.

Boarding Family Day.

……………..all together creates Super Saturday!

See you all here for a great day.

Round 5 vs St Pat’s College

Not often do we say it will take 4 days to complete the round, however with the 1st XV kicking off Round 5 on Wednesday, the Boarders vs Day Boys inaugural fixture on Friday, and the remainder of the College competing on Saturday, that exactly how long it took.

Due to a scheduling conflict, three of the four 1st XV matches were held mid-week. The 1st XV travelled to Shorncliffe on Wednesday to play SPC 1st XV. The 1st XV continued their strong performance against St Peter’s with another convincing win against St Pats.

On Friday afternoon we introduced the Boarders vs Day Boys match. In what will become an annual fixture in our calendar, both teams played with genuine passion for their jersey in this extremely physical encounter. Congratulations to the Day Boys for their 17-10 victory and bragging rights for the remainder of 2024.

We had to be creative again this week in ensuring all our teams played rugby. Thanks to Gregory Terrace for hosting a number of our teams including a Year 11 team made up of students from our 5th XV – 8th XV. This team may become a semi-regular team as we play Downlands College in two weeks with a similar group of students.

Congratulations to the remaining Opens teams for a successful day of rugby at Curlew Park. The 2nd XV through to the 4th XV all played some exceptional Marist rugby. Along with the Marist catch pass, all of the teams’ counter-attacking capabilities is really enjoyable to watch and featured prominently in their undefeated day.

The Year 10s had another dominant day. Games against St Pats, Gregory Terrace and Villanova couldn’t slow the consistency of the Year 10 teams nor the quality of their rugby. The 10As were too big and too strong at St Pat's. Following a first-round loss, the As have continued to improve each week. The Bs and Cs were too strong for St Pats and Gregory Terrace respectively, whilst the 3-way thriller between Marist 10D, Marist 10E and Villanova 10C proved against the depth of Marist rugby. Well done to everyone for the outstanding display of attacking rugby and the manner in which they played!

A physical game of rugby for the previously undefeated 9As that went right down to the wire. Trailing 7-0, Marist scored with 1 minute left on the clock, however, a missed conversion that shaved the outside of the upright proved the difference. The 9Bs physical attacking rugby and their fast line speed provided the platform for a strong performance. The 9Cs went down 15-10 in a tight contest to St Paul’s Intermediate, whilst the 9Ds and 9Es teams contested a 3-way game on McMahon Oval. Both Marist teams moved the ball exceptionally well in wet conditions and proved too strong for the Iona 9D’s.

A tough outing for two of the Year 8 teams. The 8As went down to the SPC 8As at Curlew Park, whilst the 8Cs suffered at the hands of a slightly older Gregory Terrace 14B’s. The 8Bs played very well for their win, and the 8Ds and 8Es were in sublime form out at Villanova winning their 3-way against the Villa 8Ds. Congratulations again to the mighty 8Es who are coming into some red-hot form towards the back end of the season.

The Year 7 teams had a busy and enjoyable day. The skills and agility of the 7As proved too much for St Pats, the 7Bs scored a try after 20+ phases on the siren to beat Gregory Terrace 5-0, the 7Cs bounced back with a great win against St Pats 7B’s, and the 7Ds went down to a well organised Gregory Terrace 12B’s. I have attended training each week and am grateful for everyone's hard work. The group continues to improve each week, and it’s wonderful to see the progress and commitment.

The Year 6 cohort were challenged with a number of injuries and an interrupted training week. Whilst the three teams suffered losses, some valuable lessons continue to be learned. All very close games and small margins proved the difference. The teams get an opportunity to transfer those lessons into performance again this week with games against SLC.

The Year 5 results were split 50/50 with the A and B teams having a win and the C and D teams suffering a loss. All reports are that the Year 5 teams continue to play some terrific Marist rugby and all continue to improve.

It was wonderful to see the 1st XV out at Curlew Park supporting the teams, and running as water boys and tee carriers. Having played their game on Wednesday, it was an opportunity to give back and continue to build on the genuine camaraderie within our program. A significant part of the Marist rugby program is the ability of all students to connect with all year levels and support each and every team.

Congratulations to all the students for their impressive victories over the weekend! More importantly, we commend the outstanding manner in which they played their games. The spirit of mateship and teamwork was evident across all year levels. Well done to everyone involved!

Well done to everyone involved!

Sadly, we are now five rounds down! Thanks to our terrific coordinators and committed coaching staff for again preparing the boys well and travelling to all parts of Brisbane to give the teams games. Your time and genuine care for the students is greatly appreciated!

Games on Des Connor Park, Field 7 and 8

For the remainder of the season, could I please ask all spectators viewing games on Des Connor Park, Field 7 and 8, to stay on the Grevillea Road side? Due to the ongoing maintenance work creating limited space, we want only the coaches and students to use the creek side in 2024. Thank you for your support.

Reminder For Spectators

I would like to remind all spectators of their responsibilities and behaviour when watching games here at the College or at our opposition’s venues. Young people learn best by example so I would ask that you -

  • Remember that the students participate in rugby union for their enjoyment, not yours.
  • Remember our coaches and referees are volunteers. They give their time and resources to ensure players can play the game.
  • This is a GAME!
  • The referees are human (and often volunteers).

Marist College has a zero-tolerance policy for any verbal and / or physical abuse by spectators. Should a spectator’s behaviour be deemed inappropriate, they will be removed from the grounds.

Livestream

Follow all the 1st XV action on the livestream through the Rugby Xplorer App. Games can also be accessed via https://aictv.com.au or https://www.rugby.com.au/videos
