Breaksea House News

As the term zooms by, our students have been juggling a whirlwind of activities, commitments, and opportunities. It’s inspiring to see how some of our remarkable students manage their studies alongside their passion for sports, coaching, work, and community involvement.
Our students have been making the most of our Academic Support program. After school, they attend these sessions, seeking guidance and mastering challenging subjects. It’s reassuring to see their determination and commitment to academic growth.
Four of our Year Twelves, Dannielle Frost, Lily Quick, Wayahpo Manolis and Olivia Williss recently participated in the World’s Greatest Shave, demonstrating generosity and bravery. Their selfless act of shaving their heads and chopping their locks, to raise funds for cancer research is a testament to the compassionate spirit within our school community.
When it comes to recreation, our students are spoiled for choice. From thrilling sandboarding adventures at Nanarup to relaxing swims in crystal-clear waters, they’ve embraced the natural beauty of our surroundings. But that’s not all—game nights, movie screenings, scenic tours, indulgent gelato and bubble tea outings have added zest to their leisure time.
Recently, we attended the Pre-Loved Clothing Market. Students browsed racks of stylish second-hand clothing, finding unique pieces while promoting sustainability. It’s encouraging to witness their enthusiasm for eco-friendly fashion.
National Boarding Week was an absolute hit this year! State-of-the-art farm machinery took centre stage, captivating everyone’s attention. But beyond the impressive displays, the unique activities throughout the week sparked curiosity. What makes boarding tick? Our students pondered this question, forging deeper connections with their boarding community.
In our fast-paced lives, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle, neglecting our well-being. However, taking care of our emotional, social, and physical health is crucial for leading a fulfilling life. Let’s explore why these aspects matter and celebrate the students who have embraced practices like yoga and guided meditation.
Emotional Well-Being: The Heart of Happiness
Emotional well-being impacts every facet of our lives. Here’s why it’s essential:
- Overall Life Success: Research suggests that positive emotions correlate with better life outcomes. When we prioritize emotional health, we navigate challenges more effectively, build stronger relationships, and achieve success1.
- Physical Health: Our emotional state directly affects our physical well-being. Chronic stress and anxiety can lead to immune system disruptions, hormonal imbalances, and digestive disorders. Conversely, improved mental health positively impacts physical health2.
- Confidence: Emotional wellness contributes to self-confidence. When we feel good about ourselves, we face tough situations with resilience and belief in our abilities.
- Healthy Habits: Consistent emotional well-being fosters healthy habits. Handling stress constructively becomes second nature, leading to a low-stress lifestyle over time.
The Power of Yoga
Yoga, beyond its physical postures, offers profound benefits for mental and emotional health:
- Stress Relief: Regular yoga practice reduces stress levels, promoting relaxation and inner calm3.
- Better Sleep: Yoga enhances sleep quality, allowing us to wake up refreshed and ready to face the day.
- Body Awareness: Through mindful movement, yoga connects us to our bodies, fostering self-awareness.
- Resilience: Yoga builds mental resilience, helping us cope with life’s ups and downs.
Celebrating Our Students
Let’s applaud the students who have embraced well-being practices:
- Yoga Enthusiasts: Kudos to Annabelle Lydeamore and Sophie Harris practicing yoga six times a week in the new Zen Den! They’re not only enhancing physical flexibility but also nurturing their emotional and mental health.
- Guided Meditation Participants: Twelve Year Twelve individuals took part in guided meditation session this week. Their commitment to stress reduction and positivity deserves recognition.
In conclusion, prioritising emotional, social, and physical well-being isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. As we celebrate our students’ efforts, let’s remember that a balanced life begins with a healthy mind, body, and heart.
