Visual Art - Early Years Term2

As Term 2 comes to an end, classes in Early Years are finishing up their time in Visual Art. It’s been a very busy term and students in grades Prep – 4 have been working hard creating wonderful artworks. The enthusiasm for Visual Art from staff, students and families has been overwhelming. A huge thank you to the amazing students who build on what they learn in class by sharing with their families and creating artwork at home.

Grade Prep have been learning all about how animals are represented in art and literature this term. Students have made caterpillars, colourful butterflies, magic possums, furry wombats, dancing kangaroos, blue horses and more!

Grade 1 students have explored the underwater world this term. They have focused on the use of sea animals in art and literature. Students have explored the elements of art by creating colourful seahorses, rainbow fish, wobbly jellyfish and more!

Grade 2 students have learned all about world famous artists this term such as Henri Matisse and Vincent Van Gogh. They have also explored the nonsensical world of Dr Seuss through Visual Art. Students practiced their amazing drawing skills by drawing their own versions of characters such as the Cat in the Hat. Grade 2 students also participated in a group project to design the Dream School of the Future. These emerging designers and architects drafted incredible school plans to include skate parks, theatres, bouncy castles, visual art studio spaces, arcades, miniature railways, sports pavilions, water slides, animal habitats, gardens and so much more!

Grade 3 students have explored the history of the magical world of cartoons in Visual Art this term. Students focused on developing their drawing skills by creating their own fabulously expressive cartoon characters. Students in Grade 3 also explored the lives and works of world-famous artists like Pablo Picasso and Vincent Van Gogh. Students examined the styles of the artists and created their own versions of famous works from the cubism and impressionist eras.

Grade 4 students have studied indigenous artworks in Visual Art this term, particularly the works of artist Bronwyn Bancroft. They have created several pieces to include symbols and patterns representing landscape features, animals and family. In addition to this unit, Grade 4 students have also studied the life and works of famous artists such as Vincent Van Gogh. Students attempted to recreate their own versions of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and Starry Night.

A reminder to families that there are many Visual Art exhibitions open over the school holidays if looking for something to do. Students are also encouraged to get out their art supplies and get creative over the Winter holidays. There are many great ideas online for drawing, making and creating artwork. Wishing everyone a safe and colourful semester break!

Top Designs - Media Excursion

On May 24th, our Year 12 Media students embarked on an enriching educational excursion to the Top Designs exhibit at the Melbourne Museum, supervised by myself, Daniel Hennequin, and my colleague, Miss Rebecca DiFalco. This annual showcase features the best media work from Victoria's top VCE students, offering a glimpse into the highest standards of student achievement in media design and production.

It was truly inspiring to see our students immerse themselves in the creative displays of talent and innovation. From filmmaking to graphic design, the exhibit provided a diverse array of media formats and approaches, reflecting the dynamic nature of media studies. The experience was not just educational but also motivational, as our students are now buzzing with ideas and enthusiasm, ready to develop their own folios and media products.

The day was marked by positive energy and creative sparks flying as students discussed their potential projects and the innovative techniques they observed. This excursion was a valuable opportunity for our students to see the quality of work that is possible at the VCE level and to envision their future contributions to the field of media.

We are excited to support our students in taking this inspiration into their projects, encouraging them to think boldly and innovate in their forthcoming media productions. We look forward to seeing their creativity come to life, inspired by the best of their peers.

Dante Alighieri Poetry Recitation Competition

Students from Mount Ridley College recently represented the school with pride at the annual Dante Alighieri Poetry Competition. This esteemed competition offered secondary schoolers a unique opportunity to delve into the works of Dante Alighieri, the "father of the Italian language," and showcase their recitation skills.

The competition format required participants to memorise a poem by Dante, presenting it before a judge. This not only challenged the  students' memorisation but also fostered a deeper appreciation for Italian culture and language. It was an immersive experience that allowed them to connect with the essence of Dante's words.
