Primary Year 3-6

Dear Families

This week (27 May - 3 June) is National Reconciliation Week - a time for all of us to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving lasting reconciliation in Australia.

The theme of this year is Now More Than Ever #NRW2024.  During this week, our classes will be reading stories  and learning about the amazing contributions and achievements of Indigenous Australians.

During this week , Yr 5 have read different stories including Sorry Day and then reflected on the stories through their writing. Yenuli D wrote a particularly poignant piece of writing. Well done Yenuli and all Yr 5’s.

Take Me Home - The Stolen Generation

Playing in the grass, We can hear them - time to hide,

Someone take me home.

Hiding in the bush, Women screaming, “Don’t take them”,

Someone take me home.

I close my eyes, WHY, I hope that I don’t get caught,

Someone take me home.

Tears leak out my eyes, The men say, “Come you are safe”,

Someone take me home.

“Please do not hurt me,” Screaming, crying, “Please help me”,

Someone take me home.

Men finding children, Lining us up - counting us,

Someone take me home.

“52” they say, They load us into the truck,

Someone take me home.

They send us to homes, They teach me to be “normal”,

Someone take me home.

My mother I want, Actions have ripple effects,

Someone take me home.

They give us new names, Future times they say “Sorry”,

It’s hard to forgive.

Harder to forget, Affecting future people

If said earlier

Wouldn’t have to say, They would not have to say… “please....

Someone take me home”.

CONFIRMATION FAMILY EVENING

Last week our Confirmation candidates gathered with their families to learn more about the Sacrament of Confirmation.  The students will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation on Friday 21st June and the Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Terry Curtin and Fr Ashkar.  All Yr 6 students will be involved in the preparation of this special sacrament.

We ask you to hold our candidates and their families in your thoughts and prayers.

Last week our students competed at the Division Cross Country in Yea. Congratulations to all those who competed and well done to all those who have moved through to the next level. Great work!

SES - Wear Orange Wednesday

Last Wednesday 22nd May, 2024 was Wear Orange Wednesday or 'WOW Day'. We were visited by our amazing local SES team and we learned more about how the SES protects and supports our communities in times of need. Thank you so much to Alana and the team. Our Year 6 leaders presented the Seymour SES with cards and letters of appreciation.

It was great to see and hear all about the SES - I think we have some budding SES volunteers amongst us.

Jump Rope for Heart 2024 (a message from Ms Courtney Aldous, PE Co-ordinator)

We are skipping at every opportunity at St Mary’s.

Jump Rope for Heart kicks off this term at St. Mary’s College.  Jump Rope for Heart is the Heart Foundation’s Primary School skipping challenge that helps kids move more, have fun, and raise funds for life-saving research and programs.

This year we’ve got an audacious goal to see our student Heart Heroes at St Mary’s College to log 40 hours of skipping throughout the program.  Register your child online, so they can receive the full benefits of the program and participate in online fundraising, simply follow the link below to get started  www.jumprope.org.au/parents

Students will be skipping throughout the term in PE lessons, during lunch breaks. During this time you can share their online fundraising page with family and friends to help raise money for this great cause. We will hold our school Jump Off Day on 28th June, this will mark the end of the program and is a chance for everyone to come together to skip and show off their newly learned skills.

Thank you for supporting the Jump Rope for Heart program.

Wheelie Wednesday at Our School: Year 3s Roll in the Fun

Our Year 3 students took over Wheelie Wednesday with a blast of wheels and laughter. With bikes, scooters, roller skates and skateboards,  our students showcased their skills and had a ‘wheelie’ good time. Stay tuned for more wheelie adventures and active fun at our school over the rest of the term.
