Food Studies - Year 11

Food Glorious Food Excursion to Melbourne

Year 11 Food Studies students ventured down to Melbourne last Thursday (23rd May) to explore the multicultural influences on food production, consumption and our Australian cuisine.

With only a day to explore all that Melbourne had on offer, students had a hectic day ahead. On arrival the students explored the fruit and vegetable aisles, meat and fish section and delicatessens of the Queen Victoria Markets. Their mission was to find foods and ingredients that they were unfamiliar with to bring back to school for tasting or cooking, tasting other delicacies such as churros, cheeses and salami along the way.

This was followed by lunch at William Angliss, prepared by trainee chef at this hospitality training institute. This TAFE training institute offers a range of career options for hospitality and food studies students. Whilst the menu featured a range of dishes from many cuisines, the familiarity of burgers and wood-fired pizzas proved to be the popular choices.

Students spent the remainder of the day comparing food products in different settings. This included the various precincts of China Town, Greek Street, Swanston Street K-Town, and Hardware Lane. Specialty food shops such as Brunettis (Italian cakes), world-renowned Lune Croissantarie, and Mork Hot Chocolate were visited by some. The many kilometres covered helped to balance out the kilojoules consumed! Along the way students gathered various foods to share with others for their evening meal, with dumplings being a popular choice but also Middle Eastern hummus plate, South African jerky, and Italian pastries for the train.

All returned home feeling repleted and tired yet eager to go again.
