Parent Helpers - We are keen to have you help us
At Scoresby PS we welcome parents and carers into our classrooms as we know children greatly benefit from parents who are invested in education. Last week we had 7 community members attend our Parent Helper Course who are keen to come and help in the classroom. Tonight, there is an online version to accommodate those people who were unable to attend face-to-face. If you would like to attend the online session, please click on the link below at 7.00pm to attend the meeting. https://eduvic.webex.com/meet/rheumer.nicole.l
There are many other ways to get involved in school and your child's education:
Classroom help
Parents can help in the classroom with learning activities: listening to children read, helping with Rainbow Maths or writing, helping in the Art room or other specialist areas. Please see your classroom teacher if you wish to help out in this way. We do ask that you give us some warning so we can plan activities for you to be involved in.
A current WWCC is required for ALL parent helpers in our school.
Please also see school leaders for an overview of the Parent Helpers Course (see below for extra dates and times).
Help your child at home
Reading at home is an excellent way to support your child and help their reading progress. Children who practise reading at home often make steady improvements in their reading goals and overall progress in their reading achievement.
Keeping in touch with classroom learning
Every 2nd week, the classroom teachers send out their Level Newsletters. In this you will find the classroom learning for the following fortnight. You can support the classroom learning at home by incorporating school learning in your conversations. Being interested and inquisitive about what your children have done at school helps your child know that you value their learning.
Working bees
We organise working bees throughout the year, and parents are encouraged to come and complete projects around the school. They are usually held on the weekends, and we try to have one per term.
Join a committee (PFA or School Council)
We are fortunate to have a very active Parents and Friends Association (PFA) and School Council. Being a member of one of these groups is a great way to meet local people and support your children and our school.
School Council
We have now officially called for nominations from parents to fill 4 parent vacancies on School Council for the 2026/2027 term. The term of office is 2 years. Nomination Forms are available from the school office and can be emailed upon request.
If you are a DET Employee as well as a parent at the school, please collect a separate Nomination Form at the school office. Nominations close on Wednesday 11th March 2026 at 4.00pm.
In order for School Council to be effective, we need parents who can commit to a monthly 1-2hour meeting, from 7.00–8.30pm, usually held the last week of the month. Member absences from these meetings make the running of School Council difficult.
We would love you to see some new faces on School Council. It’s a great place to make a valuable contribution to your child’s education. Please contact school leaders, or the school office, if you have any queries.
Scoresby PS is Implementing the New Frameworks from DE for Teaching, Learning and Intervention
We are well into teaching and learning this term, after setting up for success for the first two weeks of the year. Last year we completed lots of work looking at the newly-released instructional model for teaching and learning by the Department of Education – the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0 (VTLM 2.0). We attended network professional learning, courses at the Victorian Academy, and online learning about this new model.
The Victorian Teaching and Learning Model clearly breaks teaching and learning into 2 main elements:
We spent a lot of time exploring the blue elements last year in our Curriculum Days, and we are moving on this year to look at the red elements in depth.
These are some of the noticeable changes we have seen at Scoresby PS to align with the VTLM 2.0 philosophy:
Front-focussed classrooms – less distractions at the front of the room where the TV and teacher seat is; displays up the back.
Students sitting in rows not at grouped tables
Mini whiteboards are used as part of many lessons for immediate whole-class student response and feedback. The teacher also can track learning and understanding from student responses.
- Retrieval practices - time allocated in each session for retrieval practices, making sure that new learning is remembered, and students can recall the information and apply it.
Curriculum Day – this coming Tuesday 11th March
Following on from our work with VTLM 2.0, we are now focusing on the element of teaching - specifically, explicit instruction and how we provide for students who require additional support. A Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) underpins our school’s new approach to intervention.
In the past, we have implemented programs such as MacqLit and MiniLit to support students requiring literacy intervention. While these programs have been highly successful, a key limitation has been the need to withdraw students from the classroom in order to address skill gaps.
Our new approach aims to address as many of these needs as possible within the classroom setting, using a tiered model of support.
DE Model of MTSS (Intervention)
At our upcoming Curriculum Day, we will be deepening our knowledge of MTSS practices and working on a MTSS framework for Scoresby PS.
Open Mornings
We are opening our school over the weekend of Saturday 21st March and Sunday 22nd March for prospective 2027 Foundation families. Please share this with anyone you know.
