Science

Welcome to Science 2026 – we are looking forward to lots of science discoveries, fun and learning this year! The goal of Science is to nurture the natural curiosity of students, to further develop and build their understanding and appreciation of the world around them, to foster enjoyment in discovering and learning, as well as to lay strong foundations for secondary school science learning.

Each session will involve an explicit teaching component through many methods including discussions, texts, video clips, posters/diagrams/slides and reading activities, as well as a hands-on component which could be an independent or group task, activity, experiment or investigation, and conclude with reflection time.

All classes will strive to earn stars for their class star jar through demonstration of positive behaviours for learning, which will culminate in the class earning a fun explore session at the end of term.  Looking forward to witnessing some amazing responsible learning and exciting discoveries from our students!

Look out for Science week later in the year (during term 3) when we will have some exciting and engaging activities taking place!

Each term, we will explore one area of science:

Term 1 – Biology: Amazing Human Bodies

Term 2 – Physics: Forces, Energy & Motion

Term 3 – Earth & Space Science: Our Dynamic Earth and Space

Term 4 – Chemistry: Materials & Changes

Looking forward to a great year of Science with our curious young scientists at St Mary’s!

Here are a few photos of our students from our first two sessions.  Students participated enthusiastically in “explore time” by engaging in stations and activities which demonstrated a range of scientific concepts, discussed what science is all about through the construction of a class mind map, and jumped into our first area of study for the year, Biology – The Amazing Human Body, by exploring what characteristics living things have in common, how living things are categorised and how living things all have life cycles. Our seniors began looking at special features of humans, which our juniors will begin next week.  Over the term, we will be exploring a range of human body systems and how they help us to survive. Well done students – a fantastic start to the year!
