Grade 5/6

Grade 5/6 have made a sterling start to the year. Having such a positive and engaged group of students is a dream! Mrs Cotter and I have previously worked with many members of our class, and it has been a pleasure getting to know everyone a little more over the past two and a half weeks. We are looking forward to a big year of growth as we continue to build strong relationships and deepen our knowledge, broaden our experiences, and embrace new challenges.
This week, we explored the idea of belonging, and where we feel a sense of connection. Below are three thoughtful and expressive pieces of writing we are proud to share with you.
Dunstan’s Flat, a place in Chewton just past the Golden Point Res', is where I feel I belong.
That’s because of how peaceful and untouched it is. It also feels like it’s teeming with every critter and animal there is. All the old trees are so wide and overgrown, inviting all the small birds and critters to live and enjoy the dark, roundish holes inside the vast willows.
It’s all so natural and quiet that when I have a rest on the lush grass after a hard day of detecting, I start to doze off, listening to the chattery chirping of birds.
It’s also my favourite place to go detecting, for it is loaded with 150+ year old coins and relics because, during the gold rush, it was filled with miners. They used to rest and set up camp there after a long day of mining, they partied all night, dropping their gold and silver coins.

Rainbow Beach is important to me because I went there a few years ago and I got really connected to beach life. It is so beautiful. Some reasons why I love it are that I went swimming and I did a somersault because the waves were huge, we saw dolphins on the horizon, and we went on a walk through the bush up to the sand dunes. You could see everything from there. I even made a sandcastle that I could fit in. The stairs going down to the beach were rainbow because it is called Rainbow Beach, and that is why I am so connected to Rainbow Beach.

A place that makes me feel a strong connection to is the beautiful country of Malaysia. I chose this place because it is where I went for my first holiday when I was 3 years old. It is also where most of my family are currently living. It is where I first met my aunties, uncles, and my grandparents. It is also where I met all my cousins. I recently went there a year ago to reunite with my family. There are various delicious foods to eat. There is lots of street food in the morning and at night. There is always a variety of different foods you can eat there. That is why I feel a strong connection to the beautiful country of Malaysia.
