Art

F/ 1

In our first Art lesson of the year, Foundation and Grade 1 children had fun looking closely at themselves in mirrors, noticing their features, and talking about what makes each of them different. There were lots of smiles as they admired freckles, skin colour, hair colour, glasses, and all the little details that make us unique. We read the storybook ‘I Love Me’ by Peter H. Reynolds, which celebrates self-love, confidence, and appreciating what makes us special. Together, we shared the things we love most about ourselves, both inside and out.In the coming weeks, students will continue exploring their uniqueness as they draw and create their own self-portraits, learning that every face, every body, and every artwork is wonderfully one of a kind.

Essential Questions

• How is my face and body different to others?

• What makes me special and unique?

Grades 2-6

This term, we are exploring self-portraits and what it means to be God’s masterpiece. Students have been looking at how artists throughout history created their own self-portraits and how art can tell the story of who we are.As a fun warm-up, students in grades 2–6 tried a playful challenge using mirrors. They created funny and imperfect self-portraits, but with a catch, they couldn’t look at their paper while drawing! This activity, called a Blind Contour Drawing, is less about making a “good picture” and more about strengthening the way we see, focus, and connect our hands to our eyes. It helps students practise careful observation, build hand–eye coordination, and let go of the pressure to be perfect. In the coming weeks, students will continue exploring what makes them unique as they create their own self-portrait masterpieces.

Essential Questions

• How can my art show who I am?

• How can mistakes help us learn and grow?

• How can we use art to express our feelings, ideas, and identity?
