Learning Community 3

5/6A - Mr. Rennie

5/6 B - Mrs. Pettigrove

Thanks everyone for your support. We have really moved into the learning phase of the term and we are seeing wonderful demonstrations of what students can do. It has been great to see students flourishing.

Mr. Rennie is still available for any cohort or class communication. Please reach out at any time. He will not be in the class for the remainder of the term. (see Principal report)

Over the past fortnight we have been learning about...

In our text study on Blueback by Tim Winton, students have explored narrative voice, creative language choices and persuasive techniques . Students analysed how authors shape meaning through character perspective, descriptive language and figurative devices, and apply these techniques in their own narrative and persuasive writing.

In Mathematics, students have been introduced to multiplication and division strategies, with a strong focus on developing fluency in times tables. Students explore and make connections between concrete, representational and abstract thinking to deepen conceptual understanding. Through hands-on materials, visual models and written algorithms, students develop efficient processes for solving multiplication and division problems and apply these skills to a range of contexts.

In Geography, students examined how humans impact the natural environment. They investigated how First Nations Australian communities sustained their ways of living through careful land and resource management. Students explore the rehabilitation of a mine site as an example of positive human influence on the environment and consider the advantages and disadvantages of building a city in the desert. They collect and organise information from primary and secondary sources, evaluate the reliability and perspectives of these sources, and compose responses using appropriate geographical terms and conventions.

In Design and Technologies , students developed coding and problem-solving skills through creative tasks using Turtle Graphics. They begin by writing simple algorithms to draw shapes, and then explore repeated instructions to create efficient geometric patterns. As their skills grew, they enhanced their drawings with colour, layering and formatted text for visual impact. Students use loops, pen control and custom commands to produce refined, engaging designs. They apply their learning in a final project by coding a functional community sign that communicates a clear message. Throughout the unit, they test, revise and reflect on their code to ensure it meets design goals.

In Dance students have been looking at what makes a good dancer and dance. We have learnt about BFACCTSS; Balance, Flexibility, Agility/Alignment, Control, Coordination, Transfer, Strength, and Stamina. We focussed on Balance and Transfer for developing practical skills and providing feedback to our peers on ways to improve our dancing.
