Principal Team Update
Term 1 - Edition no: 02, 2026
We are officially into Week 4 of Term 1, and our school year is well and truly underway. Classrooms are settled, routines are established, and there is a strong sense of purpose and positivity across Ripponlea Primary School.
Last week, we gathered for our first official assembly of 2026, proudly led by our School Captains, Brij and Frida. They hosted with confidence and warmth, sharing their excitement about leading our community this year and their commitment to making 2026 the very best it can be for students, staff and families.
Here is a small message from them:

Hi, I’m Brij and I’m really proud to be one of your School Captains for 2026!
I’m a very sporty person and I love having a laugh and sharing good humour with others. I care a lot about everyone at our school feeling safe, happy and included. I believe it’s really important that everyone is treated equally, feels comfortable being themselves, and thinks positively about our school and community.
This is my seventh and final year at RPS, which makes this role even more special to me. I would love to help make 2026 an amazing year for everyone. I’m also really interested in hearing other people’s ideas, so please come and share them with me!
Together, we can make Ripponlea Primary an even more fun and supportive place for all students, teachers, staff and families.

Hi, I’m Frida and I’m so proud to be one of your 2026 School Captains!
I’m really excited to work with all the teachers, students and staff this year. I love to draw, paint and do craft, being creative makes me so happy! I also love making people smile. Seeing others happy fills me with so much joy.
This is my last year of primary school, so I’m going to try my very hardest to make it a wonderful year for everyone. I want our school to feel fun, kind and welcoming.
When I talk to my peers, I hope they see me as a classmate and a friend not someone who is more important or “above” anyone else. We are all part of the same school community, and I’m excited for us to have an amazing 2026 together!
A highlight of the assembly was coming together as a whole school community to sing our school song with pride for the very first time in 2026. There is something incredibly powerful about hearing every voice join together, it truly reflects who we are as a connected community.
Even more special was learning the chorus in Auslan, the Australian language of signing, taught by our very own Mr Leech. Students embraced the opportunity to learn the signs with enthusiasm, demonstrating respect, curiosity and inclusion.
Seeing hundreds of hands signing together was a wonderful reminder of our commitment to building an inclusive environment.
Last week marked a truly special moment for our school community.
Two full truckloads of our former classroom furniture have officially begun their journey to Papua New Guinea. As we farewelled the furniture, many of our Year 5/6 students eagerly stepped in to help load the trucks. They worked with purpose and pride, fully understanding the impact of their efforts.
Our students learned that in some schools in Papua New Guinea, children sit on dirt floors to learn. Knowing that our furniture will soon provide desks and tables for students who currently have none gave real meaning to the physical work they were doing. It was a powerful lesson in empathy, gratitude and global citizenship.

On the very same day we said goodbye to our old furniture, we welcomed the new.
As soon as the BFX truck rolled into the school grounds, students began cheering. The excitement was immediate and contagious. Classroom by classroom, the new furniture was installed and assembled. You could feel the energy across the school; it was palpable.
Seeing the transformation from “before” to “after” has been extraordinary. Our learning spaces now reflect the vibrant, contemporary learning environment our students deserve, while also extending opportunity and dignity to children in another part of the world.
Old

New

At Ripponlea Primary School, we often say we are small in size, big in impact and that impact is made possible by the exceptional people who work with our children every single day.
As leaders of our little school, we feel incredibly fortunate when it comes to recruiting staff who genuinely align with our values of Community, Creativity, Integrity, Open-mindedness, Resilience and Respect. Finding the right people is about more than qualifications; it is about heart, character and a deep commitment to our students.
Behind the classroom doors, in the yard, in specialist programs, in intervention spaces and in the office, are remarkable individuals who bring far more than professional expertise. They are musicians and athletes, artists and travellers, parents and lifelong learners. Some love early morning walks along the bay, others coach local sporting teams, perform in community theatre, or spend weekends immersed in books and creative projects.
These personal passions and experiences shape the way they connect with children building relationships, sparking curiosity and modelling what it means to be a well-rounded learner.
Even if a staff member does not teach your child directly, they play a role in supporting them. In a school like ours, adults collaborate closely, share knowledge about students, and work together to ensure every child is known, nurtured and challenged. Our teachers and education support staff interact across year levels at assemblies, on excursions, through wellbeing programs, leadership initiatives and everyday moments in the playground.
Over the coming weeks, we will be introducing you to members of our team so you can learn a little more about the people who make Ripponlea such a special place. We hope these snapshots help strengthen the sense of connection that makes our community so strong.
We are deeply proud of our staff and grateful for the dedication, warmth and professionalism they bring to our students each day.

I am extremely happy to begin my journey at Ripponlea Primary School.
My name is Sergio, and I moved to Australia from Spain 12 years ago. Before stepping into education, I played professional soccer up until recently. Sport has been a huge part of my life and has taught me the importance of teamwork, resilience, discipline and always striving to improve.
I am a passionate supporter of Real Madrid, and soccer will always hold a special place in my heart.
Not long ago, I also helped my dad at our Moroccan–Spanish restaurant. Working alongside him introduced me to many incredible flavours and traditional recipes, and that experience sparked my love for cooking, especially Mediterranean food. I still enjoy spending time in the kitchen whenever I can.
I also love reading, particularly history. One of my favourite books is Les Miserables, as I enjoy stories that explore resilience, humanity and the lessons we can learn from the past.
A few of my favourites:
I am really looking forward to working with the students at RPS, creating fun and engaging learning experiences, and helping every child feel confident and supported in their learning journey.
I cannot wait to be part of this wonderful community.
Hello everyone!

My name is Hayden Broadbent, and I am so excited to be joining the Ripponlea Primary School community.
For the past five years, I have been teaching in Wangaratta in North East Victoria. While I loved my time there, it feels wonderful to be a little closer to home after growing up in Bayside. I am really looking forward to becoming part of the RPS community and getting to know our students and families.
Outside of school, I love spending time with a good book; reading is one of my favourite ways to relax and learn something new. I also enjoy crocheting, which might surprise a few people! It’s a creative and calming hobby that I really value. When I get the chance, I head to the mountains for skiing; there’s nothing better than fresh air and time outdoors.
I am so excited to meet you all very soon and begin a fantastic year of learning together.
Dear Families,

I’m pleased to introduce myself as the school’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader.
My role focuses on supporting the social, emotional, and mental wellbeing of students through a whole-school approach. I work closely with classroom teachers and leadership to strengthen wellbeing practices, support positive behaviour, and help identify students who may benefit from additional support.
This includes coordinating evidence-based wellbeing programs, supporting small groups or individual students where appropriate, and assisting staff to implement classroom strategies that promote emotional regulation, engagement, and resilience. I also help monitor wellbeing data alongside existing school information to support early identification and targeted intervention.
Wellbeing supports are coordinated through established school processes and collaborative planning with teachers and leadership. The role is designed to complement classroom learning by building strong relationships, fostering a sense of belonging, and supporting students to develop the skills they need to thrive both socially and emotionally.
I look forward to working alongside staff to support student wellbeing across the school community throughout the year, and to getting to know families through school events and community activities.
At Ripponlea Primary School, we are proud to partner with TheirCare to provide high-quality Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) for our families. TheirCare offers a vibrant, nurturing and engaging program before and after school, as well as during school holidays – ensuring every child begins and ends their day in a positive, supportive environment.
TheirCare’s morning program sets children up for success. With a calm and welcoming atmosphere, students can enjoy a nutritious breakfast, quiet games, reading, creative play or outdoor activities before transitioning smoothly into the school day. It’s a wonderful way to start the day feeling connected and ready to learn.
The after-school program is where the fun really begins! TheirCare delivers a dynamic and diverse schedule of activities designed to spark creativity, curiosity and collaboration.
Children can participate in:
Programs are thoughtfully designed to cater for different age groups and interests, giving students voice and choice in how they spend their time.
During school holidays, TheirCare offers exciting themed programs and special incursions that transform each day into a new adventure. From science workshops and sports clinics to cultural celebrations and creative masterclasses, holiday care is filled with engaging experiences that children genuinely look forward to.
Aligned with Ripponlea’s values of Care, Create, Connect, TheirCare prioritises strong relationships, student voice and inclusive practices. The team works closely with school leadership and families to ensure continuity of care, safety and positive behaviour support. Children are known, valued and supported as individuals.
Families can register, manage bookings and stay updated on programming through the TheirCare online portal. Flexible booking options and Child Care Subsidy (CCS) support help make the service accessible for our community.
TheirCare is more than supervision – it’s an extension of our school community. It provides children with meaningful opportunities to explore new interests, build friendships, develop independence and most importantly, have fun in a safe and caring environment.
If you would like more information about enrolling your child in TheirCare, please visit their website or contact the school office for details.

At Ripponlea Primary School, our strength lies in our community. When families, staff and leadership work together, we truly live our motto: Care. Create. Connect. Being small in size, big in impact is only possible because of the dedication of those who step forward to support the governance and future direction of our school.
As we begin preparations for the 2026 School Council process, we invite parents and carers to consider becoming involved, either by nominating for the first time or by re-electing for a further term.
We are incredibly grateful to our current School Councillors for their commitment and thoughtful leadership. School Council plays a significant role in:
If your term is concluding this year, you are warmly invited to consider re-electing. Continuity of knowledge and experience is invaluable, and your ongoing contribution helps ensure stability and strategic focus for our school.
For parents and carers who may be considering joining for the first time, School Council is a meaningful way to contribute to your child’s education and the broader school community. No prior governance experience is required — simply a willingness to collaborate, ask thoughtful questions, and act in the best interests of all students.
Council meetings are typically held twice per term in the evening, and the environment is collegial, respectful and focused on achieving the best outcomes for our students.
Further details about nomination timelines and the election process will be shared shortly. In the meantime, if you are interested in nominating or re-electing and would like to discuss what the role involves, please feel free to contact me directly.
Thank you to those who have served, those who will continue, and those who may be considering stepping forward. Together, we shape the future of Ripponlea Primary School.
