Year 5/6 News

Learning Centre Four

Happy Friday! Please see below to discover what the students have been up to in their learning this past fortnight.

Year 5

Literacy:

Year 5 have begun the year with a novel study on War Horse by Michael Morpurgo. Students have been reading and responding to questions. They have learnt new vocabulary, which they have been attempting to add to their writing. In phonics, we are focusing on the base word ‘port’ - to carry and how to add prefixes and suffixes to the word to change the meaning.

Numeracy:

Data has been the focus in Numeracy. Students have been exploring different ways to gather data and display it. We had the opportunity to collect our own classroom data and create graphs both in our books and using Google Sheets.

Inquiry:

What are the 3 levels of government, and what are they responsible for? That is what students have begun to explore. Each week, we will focus on one level of Government and its responsibilities, starting with Local Government (Wyndham City Council).

Religion:

Students enjoyed some pancakes while learning about the importance of Shrove Tuesday and participated in an Ash Wednesday Liturgy.

Students have begun an investigation into Saint Patrick. Who he is, his early life and his importance to Australia and Melbourne. To demonstrate their learning, students created a crest of the symbols representing Saint Patrick.

Vision for Engagement:

During Wellbeing, students reviewed the schools Positive Behaviours for Learning (PBL) chart and our expectations. Students then developed their own class charters, which they all signed to show they agree they will work towards those expectations.

Year 6

Literacy:

In literacy, we have been learning about child slave labour, which links to the book we’ve been reading ‘Rivet Boy’ by Barbra Henderson. The text is about a little Scottish boy named John Nel who is 12 years old, and was forced to work on a bridge that is 361 feet tall (The Fourth rail bridge). We’ve been taking information and notes about the devastating cycle of child slave labour around the world. This information has helped us craft a persuasive text about child slavery being a violation of Human Rights.

In PHOrMeS we have been learning about the Latin-based word ‘form’, which means appearance or structure. We have learned about weird words like build, building, temperature, sure and medicine. We have been chunking them into morphemes as a strategy to make it easier to spell unknown words.

Numeracy:

For numeracy, students have been learning how to interpret and create graphs, including column, pie, bar, line and side-by-side column graphs. We are also learning how to investigate and interpret the data in different types of graphs. We have interpreted and questioned both axis, graph titles and information from different types of graphs.

We are also learning about the range, mode and shape of graphs. We are learning how to check the legitimacy of data in graphs. We are also determining the mode, range and shape of various graphs, and can create and name at least 5 different graphs and charts.

Religion:

In religion, the Year 6 students have been learning about the practice of  Lectio Divina. The word Lectio means to read, and Divina means divine. In class, we read three Bible passages, Isaiah 60:1, Matt 6:18-23 and Luke 4:16-21 as we meditated and listened carefully to the words and phrases that stood out to us. Afterwards, we reflected deeply on the meaning and wrote a prayer to God. We also shared our thoughts and ideas on how we may feel during this experience. During these lessons, we've learnt that we can use Lectio Divina in our prayer life to deepen our relationship with God, and to be open to what he's telling us.

Vision for Engagement:

Grade 6 students have been learning vision for engagement, a framework designed to foster students' thriving by cultivating safe, respectful and motivating learning environments. In this subject, we revised the 3 core values: respect, responsibility, and resilience. Of these, respect is the most important and overarches the other two values, as it can show people that you have a kind heart and a growth mindset. Students created and agreed to a class charter.
