Year 3/4 News

Four weeks have flown by, and we have been ever so busy! The students have settled into the routine of school and are engaged in their learning. We have also enjoyed having a peek at the construction site. We look forward to watching our new Discovery Centre take shape.
Thankyou
A BIG thank you to all the parent helpers who attended on Shrove Tuesday assisting in the cooking of Pancakes, they were all delicious. All in Year 3/4, staff & students really appreciate the time you gave to make Shrove Tuesday extra special.
Sunsmart
It's that time of year again when all students must wear a hat when outside, this includes break time & PE lessons. It is strongly suggested that the hat be a bucket style as this gives the best protection. School hats are available from the uniform shop. Please make sure your child's hat has their name on it. Students who do not have a hat will be asked to stay in the shade as we do have...
NO HAT, NO PLAY
Tissues Please
We are in still in need of tissues in the learning spaces. It would be great if each family could donate a box please.
Term 1 Overviews
A lot of exciting learning is being planned for our students this term. Below are the Term 1 Overviews, have a read so you know what your child is learning this term. If yu have any questions do not hesitate to contact your child's learning group teacher or Sandy.
Technology
At OLSC we have a BYOD ( Bring Your Own Device) policy. All students in Year 3 and Year 4 are expected to have a Chrome Book laptop. We are now using technology as a tool for learning so students are asked to bring their laptop to school every day. Please make sure these are fully charged.
If you and your child are yet to sign the ICT agreement please contact your child's teacher ASAP. Students will NOT be allowed to use technology until the agreement is signed.
Inform & Empower
Once again OLSC is part of the CyberSafety Program; Inform & Empower. Year 3/4 students had their first session on Wednesday. Term 1 is Digital Citizenship with a focus on digital footprints and and how they are shaped by our online choices. We also explored the purpose of strong passwords & not sharing our passwords with others.
Please read and share the parent information sheet with your child.

Year 3
Religion
As we continue to prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation students have participated in a scripture probe using stories exploring forgiveness, how we show forgiveness, how we receive and offer forgiveness, such as the Parable of the Prodigal Son.
On Wednesday the 18th the OLSC school community came together to begin the Lenten Season, with our Ash Wednesday Liturgy.
Literacy
During weeks three and four, our Year 3 students have continued to explore the following stories: How People Learned to Fly, The World Needs Who You Were Made to Be and Elmer. When unpacking the texts, students investigated images, characters and messages of each of the stories. Students were asked to share what they learnt through drawing, written responses and shared discussions such as sharing their opinion of their favourite book and why.
Maths:
We have been exploring place value and counting, including representing numbers in multiple ways, ordering numbers from smallest to largest and using numberlines to correctly order numbers. When working in maths students have had an opportunity to work with different students and teachers.
Inquiry
We are beginning to explore our Design and Technologies unit, where students will be learning about the OLSC design process including defining, ideating, prototyping and evaluating, in order to solve a problem within our school community.
Wellbeing Year 3 and Year 4
During Wellbeing sessions, students have been learning about having a growth mindset to develop resilient habits. These included:
- Learning from mistakes
- Never giving up
- Taking small steps
- Believing in yourself
The students had the opportunity to develop a home group positive agreement poster using the expectations such as working quietly, moving safely, and helping others from the 'Positive Behaviours for Learning' matrix.
The students also had their first Inform and Empower sessions this week with an introduction to Digital Citizenship. This focused on how our actions online leave a digital footprint, the opinions people form about our online identity, and how students can keep their online accounts safer. It was recommended that the students have a strong account password, only share their password with a trusted adult, and remember to sign out or lock their screen when they have finished using their account.
Year 4
Religion
Over the last few weeks in Religion, the students have been exploring the structure of the Mass and the priest's words, learning how the Mass participates in Jesus' own prayer to the Father. They identified the main parts of the Mass and this included, Introductory Rites, Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of the Eucharist, and Concluding Rites. The students completed activities that included using a graphic organiser to draw and write what happens at that part of mass, and finding out the definitions of words related to the parts of the Mass. The students participated in 'Shrove Tuesday' with some yummy pancakes to celebrate the beginning of Lent. They also received a blessing with the ashes on their foreheads on 'Ash Wednesday' at a whole school liturgical service. The ashes served as a reminder to repent and believe the Gospel as the core message of Jesus’ ministry.
Literacy
In Literacy, the students have been reading a text called, 'The Night Gardener.' They learned how to respond to questions related to the book, and explored text vocabulary with a particular focus on defining each word, and understanding the meaning and context of the word. The students continued their reading fluency routine to improve accuracy, rate, and expression. They examined the role of nouns as words that name things, people, places and ideas, and tell us the ‘who’ or ‘what’ in a sentence. The students were introduced to common nouns (things, places, people or ideas), and proper nouns (people, places or objects). The proper nouns always start with a capital letter. In the PhOrMeS curriculum, the students have been focusing on 'ar' and 'or' as R-controlled vowels that form key phonic blends for spelling and reading.
Maths
In Maths, the students continued to build on their prior knowledge of two- and three-digit addition and subtraction, fact families, and using number lines. They focused on additive word problem types and how to identify them. There students learned how to use the compensation strategy to simplify calculations by rounding numbers to the nearest ten. They were introduced to the standard written algorithm for addition and subtraction. This included regrouping, starting with tens and then progressing to hundreds. The students have also begun a unit on fractions. They will explore the relationship between whole numbers and fractional parts, how mixed numerals represent quantities greater than one whole, and how to convert between mixed numerals and improper fractions.
Inquiry
As part of our 'Civics and Citizenship' unit, the students have been inquiring into the role of local government, and the differences between rules and laws. They explored how members of the community use and contribute to local services such as waste collection, local road maintenance, parks and recreational facilities, library services, and town planning. They examined why laws are important and how they affect the lives of people. This included laws providing a community structure to address specific local needs, such as managing traffic, waste, and public spaces. The students also had the opportunity to play an interactive 'Three Levels of Government' game. You may like to play this at home by clicking on the link below.
