Year 1/2 News

Learning Centre One
What an eventful and exciting couple of weeks it has been in 1/2! The students are beginning to settle comfortably into the school routine and are developing a clearer understanding of the expectations placed on them as learners. It has been wonderful to watch their confidence grow as they become more familiar with our Learning group environment.
Inquiry:
The students spent time developing a deeper understanding of the school’s core values of Respect, Resilience, and Responsibility, and what these look like in everyday learning situations. They discussed how showing respect involves listening to others, valuing different perspectives, and treating peers and staff with kindness. Through conversations and activities, students explored resilience by learning how to approach challenges positively, persist when tasks become difficult, and view mistakes as opportunities for growth.
The students also engaged in their ' Inform and Empower' session where there learning this term is focusing on what the internet is, how listening to our body can help us recognise early warning signs, and how trusted adults can help us stay safe online.
Literacy:
We have been learning about A Year on the Farm as an informational text and exploring how a book can contain a range of different episodes or sections. The students answered questions about the text to deepen their understanding of the book and its content. They also explored what a sentence fragment is and how to identify and correct one.
In addition, we have been learning about common nouns and proper nouns. The students have explored examples of each and practised using them correctly in sentences to ensure they understand their purpose. They have also been introduced to a range of new vocabulary and have been learning the meanings of these words.
Maths:
This week in Maths, we have been busy building our understanding of place value and learning how to collect and represent data in different ways. Students have also been playing hands-on place value games to strengthen their understanding of tens and ones. The have been playing games such as, Let's Race, ones and tens bingo, bundling and making tens.
They also explored data collecting and how to use the data in a picture graph and organise the data so that it is easy to interprt. The students focused on collecting data for a given question, using tally marks and making picture graphs for the data gathered.
Through these activities, students are learning how to carefully count, organise information, and display it clearly.
Shrove Tuesday
We had a wonderful morning eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, one of those simple moments that seem to slow time in the best possible way.
Shrove Tuesday, sometimes called Pancake Day, falls the day before the start of Lent in the Catholic calendar. Traditionally, it was a day to use up rich ingredients like eggs, milk, and sugar before Lent began. Over time, that practical purpose turned into something much sweeter: a chance to gather, cook, and celebrate together.
A big thank you to the parent helpers who gave up their time to help make pancakes and support this important event!
Ash Wednesday
On Ash Wednesday, the students in 1/2 reverently received the sign of the cross traced gently on their foreheads with ashes. Each child sat f quietly, understanding that this simple gesture marked the beginning of Lent, a season of reflection, prayer, and renewal in the Church.
As the ashes were placed on their heads, the teachers softly spoke the words, “Repent and believe in the Gospel.” The moment was calm and thoughtful, inviting each student to pause and consider the meaning of these words.
Take home books:
All students will soon begin bringing home their take-home reading books. Please ensure that your child brings their book satchel to school each Wednesday, so they can safely carry their books to and from school.
Once your child receives their book, please read with them each night and record the reading in their reading journal (as shown in the picture below). Please bring book bags into school ASAP.
Thank you for your support in helping build your child’s reading skills at home!
Applications for iPads:
Below is a list of the Apps that are needed to be downloaded onto your child's device. Any questions please let us know.
Take Home Friend:
Across the year, each student will have a special opportunity to take the class friend home. This helps students practise kindness, responsibility, and care, while sharing meaningful experiences with their families and the learning group of the adventures that they got up together
