What have we been reading in our classrooms at OLSC?
Prep - Over the last few weeks, our youngest students have been enjoying books written by Joy Cowley. In response to the stories they have listened to, the Preps have participated in shared language experiences that allow them to build on their vocabulary and make clear connections to the storylines in the books. They have made delicious jelly, cooked mini muffin pizzas, and have used collage to create their own Smarty Pants.
Year 1/2s - The Year 1s and 2s have been learning about the seasonal weather cycles we experience here in Australia, through reading 'A Year on our Farm' by Penny Matthews. Through both words and illustrations, students heard how a farm undergoes change as the different seasons come about; baby animals are born, crops grow, trees lose their leaves, and the farmers work hard. The children have also been investigating the difference between writing a fragment and a sentence.
Year 3 - The Year 3 children have been sharing their personal reading interests with their teachers and peers. Encouraged to bring their favourite books to school, the students have been reading to their friends and talking about what they like and dislike when reading. Josh, Sam and Krystin have also been sharing some of their favourite books with their classes.
Year 4 - The Year 4s have also been reflecting on themselves as readers, talking with their teachers about what they enjoy reading, where they like to read and when they choose to read. Through the picture books they have been reading in class, the students have been thinking about the characters in the books and how they might describe their personality traits.
Year 5 - This term, the Year 5 classes are all reading 'War Horse' by Michael Morpurgo. This novel study takes the reader back to World War 1 and follows a brave and curious horse called Joey as he carries British soldiers into battle. Students have learnt new vocabulary, have investigated how horses were used in the war, and have been working through the process of writing their own narrative stories.
Year 6 - Our senior students have begun reading their own novel based on a historical event, 'Rivet Boy' by Barbara Henderson. This story highlights the impacts of child labour during the construction of the Forth Bridge in Scotland in 1888. The Year 6s are working on writing persuasive texts that follow a particular structure and have been analysing the characters and emotions within the book.
