Year 2 Star Lab

Year 2 Students Blast Off as Space Tourists!
On Wednesday 6th May, Year 2 students took learning to a whole new level - beyond Earth! As part of their inquiry unit, I am a Tourist, students discovered that tourists do not only travel around the world, but become space tourists traveling into space.
The exciting Star Lab incursion connected closely with the mentor texts ‘City of Light’ and ‘Curiosity: The Story of a Mars Rover’. These stories inspired students to become curious about space and encouraged them to explore what exists beyond our planet.
To help bring this learning to life, the incredible Discovery Dome was brought to BEPS. Inside the dome, students experienced a spectacular view of space right above their heads. They explored the Sun, Moon and planets in our Solar System while learning fascinating facts about space travel and the universe. Students were amazed by the moving planets and the enormous scale of space.
See below to find out about the student's experience and what they discovered about our Solar System.
James 2A - My favourite part of the incursion was when the asteroid came flying above our head.
Jasmine 2A - Did you know the side that Mercury is facing the sun is extremely hot, while the other side is very cold.
Mason 2SL - I learnt that the sun takes longer to rise in Summer than Winter, giving us more sunlight in Summer.
Zunno 2SL - Did you know the largest mountain on Mars, Mount Olympus, is three times larger than Mount Everest.
Jeffery 2H - Did you know no one can land on Jupiter because it is a giant gas planet.
