Assistant Principal's Report

Happy Mother’s Day

We would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our wonderful mums and primary carers a very special Mother’s Day for last Sunday.  We hope you were all spoiled! A very grateful thank you to our Parents Association committee and Parent Helpers for organising a terrific Mother’s Day Stall. We hope you all had fun encouraging the students to buy some great gifts for their mums! I know that some of our ‘helpers’ were VERY encouraging of their own children in pointing them in the right direction!

Excursions:

Last week, our Year 2 students enjoyed an exciting Incursion with Starlab, a Science Discovery Dome, where they explored the solar system through an immersive virtual experience. Linking with our Inquiry topic, I am a Tourist, students learned about the changing positions of the Sun, Moon, planets and stars, while building their curiosity and understanding of the world beyond Earth. The hands-on experience encouraged questioning, observation and exploration, making it a fun and unique learning opportunity for all students.

Despite the cold weather, hail and wind last Thursday, Year 6 students headed off on their excursion to tour the MGG. The excursion gave students the opportunity to explore Melbourne as a major tourist destination and learn how sport contributes to the city’s identity and tourism industry. The students took part in a guided tour and saw firsthand why Melbourne is known as the sporting capital of Australia. They then explored the Melbourne Sports Museum, learning about the city’s sporting history and its role in attracting visitors.

Year 6 also participated in a public speaking incursion run by Monash University students during the week to help them presenting in special events, assembly and speaking publicly in front of others. We look forward to watching them in action.

Education Week

Next week is Education Week, taking place from 18 May to 22 May. Education Week is an annual statewide celebration of education in Victoria and provides schools with the opportunity to showcase the outstanding learning, achievements and opportunities within their school communities.

At BEPS, we will be celebrating Education Week through a Special Assembly event on Friday 22nd May. This year we have also started conducting Open Classrooms or In Focus Year Level afternoons to provide families with the opportunity to visit classrooms, engage in student learning, and experience the wonderful programs and learning environments that make our school so special.

We look forward to welcoming families into our school Assembly on Friday 22 May at 2.40 pm in the COLA to celebrate and showcase learning at BEPS.

Attitudes to School Survey (AtoSS)

The Attitudes to School Survey (AtoSS) is an annual voluntary survey conducted by the Department of Education. The survey provides schools and the department with valuable insights into students’ experiences at school, including their learning, relationships, resilience, wellbeing, physical activity, and overall feelings about school and life in general.

Students in Years 4, 5 and 6 will be invited to participate in the survey between 18th May and 12th June. The survey will be completed during class time using a secure online platform specifically designed for this purpose.

Further information regarding the administration of the AtoSS will be shared with families of Year 4, 5 and 6 students via Compass shortly. Participation in the survey is voluntary. If you do not wish for your child to take part, please email the school at  burwood.east.ps@education.vic.gov.au by Wednesday the 20th of May 2026, including your child’s name, class and year level. Further information will be shared with families via Compass later next week.

Education Support (ES) Appreciation Day

On Saturday 16th May, it is Education Support Appreciation Day. At BEPS, we will celebrate the incredible work of our Education Support (ES) staff. While this day falls on the weekend, Education Support staff Day is an opportunity to acknowledge and recognise the valuable contribution Education Support staff make to schools and student learning every day.

Thank you to Vikki, Wendy, Jess, Jane, Naomi, Kary, Isaac, Nikki, Rhiannon, Bill and Rose for the valuable work they do each day across our school community. From supporting students in classrooms, assisting in the office and sickbay, and providing wellbeing and IT support, to caring for our school grounds and facilities, each of them plays an important role in the daily life of our school.

They manage school finances, business operations, enrolments and administration, while also supporting the health and wellbeing of students and staff. They help create the conditions that allow students to learn, teachers to teach, and our school environment to be welcoming and well maintained. Their ongoing commitment and support are greatly appreciated by our whole school community.

To all members of the BEPS ES team, thank you for the outstanding support you provide to our students, staff and families.
