CERES Excursion a great success
Last Tuesday the Foundation to Year 2 students has a most wonderful excursion to CERES, where they were introduced to the notion of Zero Waste. All the R's were taught to them regarding the environmental choices we make each and every day, as individuals, as families, as schools. Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rot was the language used to get across the message of sustainability and a zero waste environment
Year 1
Hey Families,
What a FANTASTIC time we had on our excursion to CERES! The sun was shining and the worms were squirming. As we walked along the Merri Creek, we learnt about the history of the trail, which was very interesting.
One part of the day involved making paper, which was super hands-on and lots of fun. These will take a little while to dry, and then the children will be able to enjoy them. Another activity was learning about composting, which was so cool. Did you know that orange peels should not go in the compost because they can hurt the worms’ tummies? WOW!
A big shout out to our wonderful parent helpers, we really appreciate your support. Overall, the children were fantastic, and we all had such a fun and memorable day together. I hope you all have a marvellous weekend!
Year 2
HELLO Families,
what a sensational week had by Year 2 'Gruffalos'! We celebrated Family Week with a lot of parents, grandparents too, coming in to enjoy a craft activity and watch a slideshow of our class learning. Then Year K-2 enjoyed a fabulous day at the CERES community farm learning more about how to rethink about reducing, reusing and recycling materials. We walked along the Merri Creek collecting rubbish with tongs, made paper and dug up worms, did you know worms have 5 hearts? We waved Good Bye as Year 5-6s went off to camp and started our Homework Learning packs. Thank you families, for the tremendous support as always.
Year 3/4AL and 3/4T
This week in Inquiry, students explored the three states of matter; solids, liquids and gases, through hands on investigations and discussion. As part of our learning, students participated in a “Cloud in a Jar” experiment, where they observed warm water changing into water vapour, a gas, inside the jar. Smoke from a blown out match was added to help make the vapour visible, and when ice was placed on top of the jar, the gas cooled and changed into tiny liquid droplets, forming a cloud inside the jar. Throughout the experiment, students made predictions, recorded observations and used scientific vocabulary to explain how matter can change state when it is heated or cooled. It was wonderful to see their curiosity and excitement as they explored science through practical learning experiences!
In Mathematics, students created individual flash cards as we continue to focus fluency and their ability to recall facts quickly, ultimately freeing up their working memory when solving more complex problems. We are currently exploring length and students practised accurately measuring the length of objects and explored the relationship between millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres.
Year 5/6M & Year 5/6J Camp Experience
WOW! What a wonderful experience and brilliant time our Year 5/6 campers (and staff) had at Phillip Island. Thirty-three excited students departed from school on Wednesday 13th May for a three-day adventure filled with fun, learning and unforgettable memories.
With perfect weather throughout the entire camp, students were able to fully enjoy every activity and experience. From visiting Phillip Island Chocolate Factory and exploring farm life, to watching the gorgeous little penguins waddling out of the cold ocean at the famous Penguin Parade, every experience was filled with excitement and wonder. Students also searched for koalas at the Koala Conservation Reserve, enjoyed surfing and boogie boarding at the beautiful beach, and loved feeding the pelicans at San Remo Pelican Feeding.
Camp was an excellent experience for all our wonderful students, providing opportunities to build independence, resilience, teamwork and friendships. We were incredibly proud of the way students challenged themselves, supported one another and represented Sacred Heart so positively throughout the entire camp experience.
