First Whittlesea World for Term 2

This week, we held our first Whittlesea World for Term 2. It was fantastic to see many students trade in their Golden Tickets for a variety of items such as sports cards, texta packs, fidgets, notebooks, trinkets, and a 'Principal for the Morning' award. Well done to all students who have continued to receive Golden Tickets for demonstrating our school expectations of 'Do Your Best', 'Respect Your School', and 'Help Others Succeed'. A big thank you also to our school leaders for their continued support in helping run Whittlesea World. Whittlesea World will again be open for Golden Ticket trading in Weeks 7 and 10 of this term.

Disability Inclusion

May is Apraxia Awareness Month:

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a speech disorder where the brain has difficulty planning and coordinating the movements needed for speech. Children with CAS know what they want to say, but the message from the brain to the mouth doesn’t always work smoothly, which can make speech sound unclear or inconsistent.

You might notice that a child with CAS:

  • has difficulty putting sounds together into words
  • says the same word differently each time
  • finds longer or more complex words tricky
  • may become frustrated when trying to communicate

How can we support at school and at home:

  • give extra time for children to express themselves
  • encourage all forms of communication (talking, gestures, visuals)
  • keep a calm, low-pressure environment for speaking
  • celebrate effort, not just “correct” speech
  • work closely with speech pathologists and follow recommended strategies

Apraxia Awareness Month is all about building understanding, patience, and support. With the right help, encouragement, and time, children with CAS can continue to grow in confidence and communication.
