Cultural Celebrations

Reconciliation Week
This week, Weeden Heights PS recognised National Reconciliation Week and National Sorry Day on Tuesday.
National Sorry Day is a time to remember the Stolen Generations, when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were taken away from their families, communities and culture many years ago. We say sorry for the hurt and sadness this caused.
Reconciliation means building respectful relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians. It means listening, learning, showing kindness and treating everyone fairly.
Students were informed at assembly that they too can help bridge the gap by learning about First Nations cultures, showing respect and including others in our school community every day.
This year’s Reconciliation Week theme, “Bridging Now to Next,” reminds all of us that together we can learn from the past and build a brighter future.
In 3/4A on Tuesday, students acknowledged the day by discussing what National Sorry Day is and why we recognise it. Students then created their own Sorry Hands, which formed a colourful wreath.
