Hello from Hakea!

On Monday, we enjoyed a wonderful incursion all about Australia’s unique wildlife. In preparation for the experience, we invited the children to share their ideas about Australian animals and discussed which animals are native to Australia. Together, we explored the importance of learning more about our Australian wildlife and watched an educational video that introduced new vocabulary such as marsupial, nocturnal, herbivore, and carnivore.

By the time Vince from Aussie Wildlife Displays visited us, the children had developed a strong foundation of knowledge and were excited to extend their learning through real-life interactions with a variety of Australian animals.

During the incursion, we met two snakes - Sue the pygmy python and Tabitha the black-headed python. We were also introduced to Martha the blue-tongue lizard and Gumnut the shingleback lizard. Next, we met Steve, a tiny squirrel glider possum who enjoyed eating corn from his sleeping bag! He was followed by Kelly, a very large wombat who happily munched on sweet potato and carrot. Lastly, we met Jack the saltwater crocodile and Dennis the red-tailed black cockatoo. Dennis loves to stretch his wings!

Throughout the experience, the children learnt about where the animals live, what they eat, how big they can grow, their ages, and the unique features that help them survive in their environments. Following the incursion, the children participated in a creative reflection experience where they drew pictures of their favourite animal and shared why they enjoyed learning about it. This created a beautiful collaborative mural that captured their learning and reflections from the day.
