Good Shepherd In-House Chess Tournament

We certainly have a lot of chess players at Good Shepherd! Our first In-House Chess Tournament saw 50 students from Prep to Year 6 come together for a great day of chess.

It was fantastic to see students from across the school playing against one another, particularly as the tournament pairings meant they often found themselves across the board from students in completely different year levels. Of our 50 competitors, 27 were members of our weekly Chess Club, which means almost half came from outside the Club. It was great to discover just how many keen and capable chess players we have throughout the school!

The success of the tournament has also opened the door to making in-house and inter-school tournaments a regular part of our chess program.

Students played seven rounds throughout the tournament, with each player having 15 minutes on the chess clock. At the end of each round, results were entered into the tournament program, which then generated the pairings for the next round based on how students were progressing. This meant everyone played a range of different opponents throughout the day.

Following the seventh and final round, trophies were presented to the overall first, second and third place winners. A medal was also awarded to the highest placed student from each unit: Prep, Junior, Middle and Senior.

On September the 1st, many students participated in Good Shepherd’s first chess tournament. Many students from prep to grade six were gathered in the performing arts to play 7 games of chess that ran all day! The tournament was run by two instructors called Daniel and Jerome, who enforced 3 rules and helped students to ensure the competition ran smoothly. It was very competitive, but it also turned out to be more fun than I expected. I competed against many different students from each level and earned points from each game I won. There were many talented and experienced chess players, but overall the winner of the chess tournament was Sebastian from grade six, winning every single match. 

The chess tournament was an incredible experience and I had so much fun competing against many other talented chess players at our school.

On the 1st September, students at Good Shepherd competed in a Chess Tournament in the Performing Arts Building. Everyone was very excited to start the competition and some people were nervous but some weren't. There were clocks that had 15 minutes on it and lots of chess boards, it was very competitive. If the timer gets to 0, you lose the game. Each game you could earn points in different ways. They chose the players randomly, so a prep student could verse a Year 6 student if they got the same number. We played our rounds and when it was over some people got a medal! It was lots of fun, if it's on again next year we definitely want to do it again!
