Learning Centre News...

Learning Centre One

Welcome to all the new prep families that have begun this year! We have all had a great start to the year and the students have come to school with a spring in their step, ready to begin school life at OLSC.

The prep have been getting used to the school routine and getting to know their teachers and peers. It has been great seeing the students so eager to learn and participate throughout the day in the learning and activities that are taking place.

In English, the preps have been learning about the phonics sounds S,A,T and through this have been engaging in activities that focus on the sounds that they’ve been investigating. The preps then began to look at texts and the range of ways that we can respond and explore those stories that we’ve read. The preps have participated in a range of language experiences relating to the texts - The Monster’s Party, Pet Shop and the Hungry Giant’s Lunch. We will continue to explore those texts over the coming weeks. The students then began exploring concepts about print by learning to locate the front cover, title and back cover.

During Maths, the preps have been exploring 2D shapes. The students looked at and made familiar shapes that they knew using the geoboards. The students then used real world materials to create their own 2D shapes. The students then looked deeper into shapes and explored their properties, names and the concept that a 2D shape is ‘flat’.

In Religion, the students have been exploring the concept of prayer and how this is a time that we can reflect, be respectful and talk to God. The students looked at the different items we place on our prayer mats and the significance that they hold. The students started learning the Lord's prayer and the sign of the cross.

As of next week, the preps will be required to bring their devices to school. Please ensure that the device is charged and ready each day for learning. Any questions please see your child/ren learning group teacher.

Just a reminder that the preps will be beginning their full school week starting the week of the 26th February.

We look forward to working in partnership with you,

Prep Team

Learning Centre Two

Welcome back to all of the families of our new year 5 and 6 students for 2024! The students have settled beautifully into the LC2 routines. New learning has begun and new friendships have been made.

LITERACY

This week in Literacy, the 5/6s have begun looking at books by the Australian author, Graeme Base. We started with Animalia, an amazingly illustrated book about animals who are surrounded by things beginning with the same letter as their name. The children worked in small groups to try and identify these many objects.

The writing in the book is in the form of short alliterative sentences about the pictures. The students have had a go at writing their own sentences modelled on those in the book.

MATHS

To begin the year, in Maths, we are focusing on number and place value. The students have created displays about the different numbers important in their lives. They have used these numbers and compared them with others, ordered them in ascending and descending order, and created graphs to represent a class set of numbers.

STUDENT LEADERS

On Monday, we had our first whole school assembly for 2024. This was an opportunity for the new student leaders to be presented with their badges in front of the school body and some of their parents. These students were chosen by the teachers and their peers last year based on their speeches and the way they actively shared the school values with others. We look forward to watching them grow in these leadership roles and to seeing how they can make an impact and bring about change to OLSC.

Learning Centre Four

Welcome to our new Year 3 students, and welcome back to our Year 4 students, to what promises to be a very eventful 2024 in LC4. Students in LC4 have settled into the year in a very calm manner, while definitely demonstrating their enthusiasm for the new year.

We would like to highlight that students should have received a new diary this week. It is the responsibility of the students to record their daily reading and spelling words. Teachers will check these regularly.

LITERACY

In Reading this week, students in 3/4 have been exploring a variety of skills we use when reading, such as predicting, visualising, questioning and inferring. Student listened to a short descriptive passage about an animal character. From this description, they then drew an image to reflect what they heard. Descriptive words and noun groups to describe the characters were added around the image. As you can see, there were many different interpretations.

MATHS

In Maths, we have been exploring place value through hands on materials and thinking about numbers in different ways - we put numbers in 'place value houses', wrote them in expanded form and in words. We have also been reviewing the concept of odd and even numbers, and how to determine if a number is odd or even, no matter how big, or small, the number is!

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

To begin the term, we have been exploring prayer and in particular common prayers of the Church, such as the Our Father and Hail Mary. Students unpacked the meaning of these prayers and then wrote their own versions. These will become like 'prayer flags' in our learning centre.

INQUIRY and WELLBEING

We have been exploring the school PBL expectations during Wellbeing and Inquiry. We have also be learning about group work and participated in lots of physical activities like 'human knots'. The first few weeks of school are important for making new connections and friendships in new learning groups. Students have also been sharing with their teachers and learning groups their strengths and areas they would like to improve.
