Health Care Needs Policy

At Eltham High School we work with families to ensure that clear plans and processes are developed and maintained to support students’ healthcare needs, either on enrolment or when a healthcare need is identified. A Student Health Support Plan for students who may need medical care or assistance will be prepared by the First Aid Officer in conjunction with the Sub-School (leader or coordinator) in consultation with the student, their parents, carers, and treating medical practitioners.

The Health Care Needs policy should be read with Eltham High School’s First Aid, Administration of Medication, Anaphylaxis, and Asthma policies.

Camps, Tours & Excursions

Camps, excursions, tours, and incursions are an integral part of the school curriculum as they enable students to explore, extend and enrich their learning and their social skills development in a non-school setting.

Our Camps, Tours & Excursions policy is intended to complement the Department’s policy and guidelines on excursions, camps and adventure activities which all Victorian government schools are required to follow. Eltham High School will follow both this policy, as well as the Department’s policy and guidelines when planning for and conducting these activities.

Sun Smart and Dress Code

Sun safety is a shared responsibility. Staff, parents and students are encouraged to implement a combination of sun protection measures whenever UV levels reach 3 and above (typically from mid-August to the end of April in Victoria). Guidelines supporting our students and staff to help minimise the risk of sun damage and skin cancer are outlined in the Sun Smart policy.

The school’s Dress Code policy outlines expectations for students regarding appropriate clothing within a school environment. There are specific aspects of this policy that relate to sun protection outlining that brief clothing is not appropriate for school – this includes singlets, short skirts and shorts, exposed mid-riffs and thongs and open-toe footwear.

Information about the daily local sun protection times is available via the free SunSmart app, or at sunsmart.com.au or bom.gov.au

Student Mobile Phone Management

The Victorian Government views the safe and responsible use of digital technologies, student safety and wellbeing, and the development of social skills and positive behaviour as paramount. From Term 1 2020, students who choose to bring mobile phones to school must have them switched off and securely stored during school hours.

Opportunities for students at recess and lunchtime to communicate with each other face-to-face or be involved in physical activity are valued over and above the use of mobile phones and social media. Eltham High School’s Student Mobile Phone Management Policy outlines the requirements of the Minister for Education relating to students using mobile phones during school hours.
