Grade 5 Visits

On Thursday the 7th and Friday the 8th of December we had four of our local primary school attend the College for the “Grade 5 Mordi Experience’. The primary schools that took part were Edithvale PS, Mordialloc Beach PS, Chelsea PS and Chelsea Heights PS.

There was well over 200 students that attended over the two days, all getting to experience some of the exciting subjects on offer at Mordialloc College.

The activities that had been planned by the Learning Area’s involved were all very well received by the students and engagement in each one was high, and you could see how much fun they were having throughout each one.

In Art there were two sessions that had been planned. One was a self portrait in the style of Picasso, and the other was a huge 8m landscape creation – which encompassed more than 6 students per sheet creating a vast range of landscapes. We saw everything from forest landscapes to city landscapes, flat landscapes, mountainous land and even a space landscape. It was great that they were able to take a piece of art, whether it be the Picasso self-portrait or the landscape back to their primary school classroom.

In Food Studies they were able to channel their inner chef and make their own Pizza creation – and seeing how quickly they had devoured them after definitely suggests it was a popular dish indeed.

PE got them all running around and getting rid of some excess energy. There were individual minor games being played, team based minor games were a huge hit and by the time they had been engaged for 30 minutes they were ready for a rest and then move on to see what was next.

The Science learning area went all out. They devised an activity in which, when the students entered the room they were emersed into a ‘crime scene’ - someone had taken all the Kris Kringle presents and was holding them for ransom. It was up to the students to figure out who the culprit was out of four suspects. There was fingerprint analysis, there was ink analysis – and finally they were able to identify the culprit. It was great fun for all involved.

I would like to thank all the teachers who volunteered their time during these two days to ensure that these Grade 5 students got to have such a great experience.
