Student Learning

Foundation

It has been a fun and busy start to school for our Foundation students.

They have been learning about the THRASS chart, practising their handwriting and working with numbers to build towers with a partner.

Our word of the week is tin, look at the wonderful creations we made using 'tin' we were very proud and enjoyed sharing our pictures with each other.

Grades 1 & 2

Grade 2 have been building their mindfulness toolbox and adventuring outside to make nature mandalas.

Grades 5&6

The Grade 5/6s have been revising their understanding of place value this week through fun games and hands-on learning in Maths. Here are some pictures of them at work.

STEM

We've kicked off the year with a discovery of what the four disciplines in STEM entail. Across all grades, students have delved into the essence of STEM, exploring the qualities essential for scientific inquiry. Conversations have centred around courage, creativity, open-mindedness, and the valuable skill of failing well.

In line with our commitment to inclusivity, we proudly observed the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11th. We encourage families to engage in discussions affirming that STEM is indeed for everyone. For additional insights, check out this valuable resource: Future You Australia - Pathfinders.

Upcoming Highlights:

Foundation Classes: Dive into the world of materials as students explore their properties and apply their knowledge to design and craft hats.

Years 1 and 2: Embark on a coding adventure.

Years 3 and 4: Journey into the realm of forces and energy, culminating in the design and construction of rubber band-powered cars.

Years 5 and 6: Master the intricacies of 3D design software to bring their own superheroes to life through 3D printing.

We welcome your valuable feedback and ideas to enhance our STEM program further. Connect with us via email at paul.todd@education.vic.gov.au or call the school at your convenience. Your insights contribute to an enriching and interactive learning experience for our students.

Here's to a year filled with discovery and innovation in STEM!

Performing Arts

Maths and Music:

Following on from the maths incursions that the students participated in last week, Performing Arts lessons this week have been all about maths!

The foundation students have been learning songs about numbers and counting. Does your foundation student remember any of the songs they have learnt? Maybe they could teach them to you!

The grade 1s and grade 2s danced along to a rap song that was all about patterns. Check out the Performing Arts pages on the specialist online learning site if you want to listen to the rap. They then had a go at composing and performing their own patterns on instruments of their choice.

Some of the grades 3-6 used balance scales to work out musical note values that were equal to each other. Other groups measured our boomwackers to discover how the length of the instrument affects the pitch. Some students used chance to compose pentatonic songs, and discovered that no matter what order the notes of the pentatonic scale are in they still make a lovely piece of music.

We can’t wait for next week when the maths and music continues!
