Library News

Welcome to our fabulous library community for 2024 and an especially warm welcome to families who are new to our school in 2024. It has been an absolute pleasure to watch new students exploring the shelves, finding books they love and books they are excited to read. Thank you to our returning students as you have shown kindness and empathy teaching new students where to find resources and sharing your love of reading with new friends. I am always grateful to see this gentle humility amongst our students. It is lovely to have students with us again and we are enjoying seeing students make the most of our facilities and resources.

The library welcomes Mrs Michelle Hassell to our library staff in Term One; Wednesday to Friday. Mrs Hassell has had a busy first week signing out textbooks and getting to know students from all years of the campus.

We are open Monday to Thursday, 8.20am to 4.30pm

Friday, 8.30am to 3.30pm

Library Lovers Day

Library Lover’s Day is on Wednesday 14 February. It is a day to celebrate the valuable roles libraries play in our lives. We all remember the joy of discovering something as a child and I encourage everyone to “show the love” for reading, finding out, inquiring, and discovering things.

Libraries are asked to find their own theme this year. One of my favourite libraries’ is the Yarra Plenty Regional Library in Northeast Melbourne. All About YPRL

This year they have explored the theme of finding your true love and relate the things you need to find true love to what their library and ours can offer.

Tip One. Look for partnerships, not just romance.

Every library encourages our community to come together for friendship, collaboration, discovery and craft. Library Lovers Day is a great time to try one of our romance novels or a sweet picture book to warm your heart.

Tip Two. Be yourself, always.

We welcome everyone at the library.  We welcome you as your true self, without judgement, with acceptance.

Tip Three. Love yourself first.

We have lots of resources to help you along your self-love journey.

Big wondering question… How do you know when you have discovered your true love?

  • You are accepted for who you are. We look forward to you coming through our door and we want to help you with your reading, information and digital needs.
  • The library is a safe place for our community. We trust you, and you can trust us.
  • And that special feeling that love gives? We have collections and activities chosen with our community in mind. Discover the world and exciting places with us, connect with our stories and immerse yourselves in the joy of reading.

Stick with us and discover true love in our library.

We would love to have images of our families experiencing the true love of reading with their children. If you would like to send us an image of you and your child reading together or perhaps with grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings…We would love to display them in the front foyer of the library. Happy to take photos here in the library as well. Come in; we would love to see you.

Book Club

Book Club is a great fundraiser for our library and we appreciate your support. Book Club forms for Term One have been handed to classes and are due back on Friday 16 February.

There are two options for ordering.

  1. Use your own Scholastic account to order and pay online. (Loop) If you would like to set up a new account go to: http://scholastic.com.au/register
  2. Please enclose cash with your completed order form. Cheques should be made payable to Scholastic Australia. Your completed forms can be handed into the Library.

I wish everyone a fabulous year ahead.

Yours in reading,

Maths News

Mathspace is an online learning tool that Great Southern Grammar uses with students from as early as Year Four.  It utilises powerful adaptive learning technology for mathematics and aims to give the right help, at the right time, for everyone.

Here at GSG, we use it in the classroom when we feel it fits right with our practices, and also to set homework tasks to build skills and techniques.  As a parent, you can also use Mathspace at home to encourage your child to become a self-directed learner. With Mathspace, they can practice what they’re learning at school and get personalised support in topics they might find challenging.

Mathspace is running two free webinars for parents and carers to share tips on how you can support your child’s learning on Mathspace at home.  The registration links for these webinars are:

More information on these webinars is included in the flyer that you can find here 2024 Parent and Carers Info Night Flyer.pdf
