From The Team

Welcome back! It has been a very smooth and positive start to the year already and we are looking forward to what 2024 will bring. The 1/2 team would like to introduce themselves and tell you a bit about their holiday…

Ms Symons - 1/2K Teacher (Mon, Tue, Wed) and Level Coordinator: I had a very busy holiday with my family. We had a fantastic day at Funfields where I was dragged on all of the waterslides! I spent many days watching cricket as Mitchell played in a rep carnival over several weeks. I am very excited to be working back in Level 1/2 this year and I look forward to working with Mrs Fox and all of the students in 1/2K.

Mrs Fox - 1/2K Teacher (Thur, Fri): I had a fantastic holiday! We celebrated my son, Liam’s, 3rd birthday and spent lots of time with family and friends. It was great to get out-and-about, visiting some fun places like Healesville Sanctuary and the beach. I am really looking forward to teaching 1/2K this year alongside Ms Symons, and seeing all their wonderful achievements and growth.

Miss Flintoff - 1/2F Teacher : I had a wonderful break. I went to Phillip Island with my family. I had fun paddleboarding at the beach with my cousins. It has been a busy first few weeks settling into life at Scoresby PS.

Tania - 1/2K Aide (Wed, Thur, Fri): Super excited to jump back into the 1/2 level this year! I had a great holiday and spent some time with my family at Phillip Island – sun, surf and lots of relaxing. I look forward to what adventures and learning this year will bring.

Sharon - 1/2K Aide (Mon, Tue): During the holidays, my focus was on being with my family as well as visiting our friends around Melbourne and Geelong. It was very special to me to reconnect with the people I love and share our cherished memories together. I also took my two children, Clare and Brendan, to Gumbuya World (one of their favourite theme parks in the world) and spent the whole day in the water park watching them floating in the wave pool and swirling on the giant slide. Both of them were extremely exhausted at the end of the day but couldn’t wait to return there again in the next summer holiday! As I return to school, I feel refreshed and look forward to embracing all the possibilities and an exciting journey ahead in 2024!

What We Are Learning In Specialist Classes             In Term 1

Visual Arts

This term, students will be exploring the art element of colour through drawing and painting. They will create a painted colour wheel by mixing primary-coloured paint to create secondary colours. Students will practise differentiating between warm and cool colours, whilst practising brush control, to paint shapes and spirals. Later in the term they will be introduced to neutral colours.

Students must bring an art smock to school to protect their school uniform. Smocks can be bought or made from an old, oversized top. The smocks must be clearly named and will be kept in a classroom tub for the children to wear when using messy art materials.

Mandarin

Welcome back to the new term at SPS! It's exciting that students will have the opportunity to learn another language every week throughout the year.

In Term 1, spanning from Year 1 to 6, during the first three weeks, we will introduce essential facts about China such as geography, population, inventions, national animals, flowers, and the structure of the language. This approach is designed to ensure that students have a clearer overview of China and recognise the importance of learning Chinese. Additionally, as Chinese New Year approaches, the following two weeks will be dedicated to exploring this cultural celebration with engaging and enjoyable activities planned for the students. It's worth noting that the content and activities will be tailored to different grade levels, providing each level with its own unique area to explore. This approach acknowledges the diverse learning needs and capabilities of students across various grades. For the following weeks, the planning is as following:

Year 1/2 students will learn and consolidate their knowledge about numbers. To expand their knowledge, they will also delve into the concepts of time and week.

Science

During Term 1, students in Year 1/2 will be exploring animal biology and how it fits into our wider ecosystem. We will be investigating the differences between living and non-living things, as well as the external features animals have to aid in their survival. Students will be looking at different animal habitats as well as being introduced to plant structures.

Performing Arts

To be advised when Mr Boyd returns from Long Service Leave.

Physical Education

To be advised when Mr Boyd returns from Long Service Leave.

Off To A Great Start!

The Year 1/2 students have been enjoying learning and playing new maths games with a variety of different classmates, and have been practising how to be a good maths partner. They have also been practising to build their skip counting skills.
