Grade 3/4’s Get Ready For The Olympics!

Students in Grades 3/4 have been eagerly awaiting the start of the Olympics and have celebrated in class by researching different sports and athletes. With a focus on Australian athletes, students have explored our rich history with significant figures such as Indigenous Australian, Cathy Freeman.

In order to really get in the ‘zone’ of what it feels like to be at the Olympics, students researched, planned and published recounts in the perspective of athletes competing in events. We learnt all about emotive language in the process and added words and phrases to our writing that portrayed strong emotions.

Quotes taken from our recounts:

“It was a few days before the Olympics, my heart started pounding but I took a deep breath and I felt relaxed.”

 - Aaron

“The Paris Olympic games were full of confidence from every competitor including me. My soccer matches were intense and everyone was trying their best.”

- Eyal

“There was my moment, with one arm I stroked the water and I was first. The medal was so heavy and I felt so much joy.”

- Olivia

Literacy in Grade 3/4

This term … in literacy we have been reading about famous olympians that competed in different sports, and we also have been learning about 3 different sports that are fencing, wrestling, pentathlon.  We are working on summarising texts in writing and in reading we are researching aboriginal olympians.

And lastly in spelling we learning about words with the prefix mis-, which means badly or poorly.

Maths in Grade 3/4

We have been learning about Multiplication and Division. We have been practising the times tables and how repeated addition helps us learn multiplication. We played different multiplication games using dice, counters, and game boards to show our multiplication understanding.

This week we have started learning about division. We have made the connection that knowing our times tables can help us to solve division problems. We have been playing games like Daily 10 and using counters, arrays and drawings to show and solve our division problems.

Inquiry in Grade 3/4

In preparation for the Olympic Games starting this week, the Grade 3 and 4 students have been learning about Indigenous Australians who have gone to the Olympics. The students have enjoyed researching trailblazing Aussies like Cathy Freedman, Ash Barty and Patty Mills. Using their ICT skills, they have developed presentations about an Indigenous Athlete of their choice.
