Principal's Ponderings

From our Principal - Mr Chad Smit

Excellence and Hospitality

I am continually inspired by the dedication and spirit of our whole school community. Our commitment to excellence and hospitality shapes not only our school but also the wider community in which we live. These values are at the core of who we are, guiding our actions and interactions every day.

Recently, I commenced reading the book 'Unreasonable Hospitality' by Will Guidara. It has drawn me into the understanding of being committed to hospitality and service. In the book, the author defines a conflict, having excellence and hospitality being equal and in balance within your organisation.

Excellence at DCS is not just about achieving high grades or winning competitions; it is about striving to do our best in every aspect of life. Colossians 3:23 reminds us, 'Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.' This scripture encourages us to approach every task with dedication and passion, knowing that our efforts honour God.

Excellence in our work, our learning and our service at DCS is a form of worship, a way to glorify God through our diligence and commitment. At DCS, we aim to instill this principle in our students, encouraging them to pursue excellence in their goals, with integrity and perseverance.

Along with excellence, we see hospitality as a significant commitment. Hospitality goes beyond opening our doors; it is about opening our hearts to others. Hebrews 13:2 urges us, 'Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.' This powerful message reminds us that every act of kindness and hospitality reflects the love of Christ.

Mother Teresa beautifully stated, 'Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love." Each small act of hospitality, whether it is a warm greeting, a listening ear or a helping hand, contributes to a welcoming and supportive community. At DCS, we strive to create an environment where everyone can feel valued and loved.

Both these two commitments are echoed in our school grounds, classrooms, meetings and conversations. It is true we want our caring heart to be lived out daily! This Saturday we will be witnessing a clear example of hospitability as we look forward to our upcoming DCS Trivia Night. I wish to applaud and thank the phenomenal work of our DCS Community, many parents, friends and community members for the incredible efforts from our Trivia Team. Their commitment to hospitality in planning, organising and running this event exemplifies the very best of our community spirit. This event is more than just a fun evening (which of course it always is!); it is a testament to our collective dedication to supporting our school and each other.

The funds raised from Trivia Night will go towards our Year 9/10 Centre, providing much-needed resources to enhance our secondary students’ learning experiences. Your participation and generosity make a significant difference, and I want to remind you that all donations are tax-deductible.

I encourage everyone to join us for Trivia Night, experience the hospitality and excellence, and support this wonderful cause. It is an opportunity to come together, enjoy each other’s company, and contribute to the growth and development of our school. Let’s celebrate the spirit of excellence and hospitality that defines our community. If the evening is all sold out, I encourage you to still participate in donating or blessings and helping!

May we continue to strive for excellence and extend hospitality in all we do, reflecting the love and grace of Jesus Christ in our school and beyond.

Shalom, shalom.
