Learning Centre One
What a fun filled couple of weeks the preps have had! We celebrated our 100 days of learning with a day of activities. The students jumped their way to 100 on a giant jumping castle, threaded 100 fruit loops to make a necklace, danced and partied and created a 100 book to represent all the different things that were 100. It was a fabulous day celebrating with the preps as they reached this exciting milestone in their first year of school. We look forward to seeing all they achieve in the next 100 days!
In Literacy, we have been exploring a range of texts and looking at the fairytales ‘ Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood’ The students’ have really been enjoying learning about and engaging in activities explicit to the texts being shared. In writing the students have been using the texts as tools for writing. They have been looking at character, setting and creating their own ending to a story and have retold the story in a range of ways. The students in phonics have continued to learn and investigate sounds during this time. It has been great seeing them using this knowledge in their reading and writing.
Throughout Maths the students have been learning about data. They have generated their questions, gathered responses using a range of modes, graphed the data and then interpreted what they have gathered and asked. The students were very engaged in the learning and enjoyed coming up with a question that was of interest to them.
During religion, the students have been learning who is part of their school and family, how they belong and are a part of them both and how we connect and are part of God’s family. The students have been really engaged in this learning and have really been thinking deeply about how God connects to them, their family and school.

Learning Centre Three
The Grade 1/2s have had another busy two weeks. Each learning group has attended their third Inform and Empower session. In this terms session, we learnt about keeping some information private, such as usernames and passwords. Parents, make sure to use the conversion starters below with your children at home.
On Monday the 29th of July we had our Pyjama Day where we got to come to school in our pyjamas! We had an extra cozy day all rugged up and warm, no thanks to the cold Melbourne winter!
Let the games begin! Each learning group dressed wearing their learning group colours and we had our very own 1/2 Mini Olympics. Each learning group made their own Learning Group Flag and had representatives from their class to carry the flag and torch during our Opening Ceremony, except we didn't have Celine Dion to sing for us like they did in Paris. Each learning group teacher ran an event, which consisted of Relay, Javelin Throw, Long Jump, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Hurdles and Shot Put. Well done to all the 1/2 Mini Olympians who gave it their best go. Well done to all of the medalists and award winners on the day.
Thank you to the students that participated in Nude Food Day for this term. Nude food days will continue to occur here at OLSC and is a great discussion point about how we can reduce the amount of rubbish that is generated by packing children’s lunchboxes.
On Friday the 9th of August we had our whole school mass. Just a reminder that all parents and families are welcome to attend our whole school masses. Students in 1/2 often have a role at mass, such as singing in the choir, reading or bringing up an item, such as the bread or wine.
In Literacy, we have been looking at the texts ‘Meerkat Mail’ and ‘Dear Dragon’. They both involve letters and postcards, which we have been exploring. The teachers have been writing letters to each other and the students got assigned a pen pal in another 1/2 learning group to write letters to.
During Maths, we finished up looking at shapes and patterns. We used tangram sets and air-dry clay to make patterns. In Week 4 we began looking at measurement, in particular length. We have been using hands on ways to explore length, such as feet, handprints and other informal units of measurement.
Throughout Religion, we have been exploring the members of our community. We were lucky enough to have Tina D come and talk to us about choir and how singing is praying twice. We also had Clare and Shenarie talk to us about being an Alter Server. Additionally, John, our Religous Education Leader, came and spoke to us about what priests do within our Parish.
In Inquiry, we have been discussing and learning about the Olympics! We started at the very beginning, in Ancient Greece where the games began. The Paris 2024 Mascot and the Australian Team uniforms were interesting topics of conversation as we discussed the meaning behind them. We finished the week by looking at local Olympians such as Bailey Lewis, Anastasia Kusmawan, Marissa Williamson Pohlman, Amy Cashin and Thomas Hodges, who all come from Werribee and the surrounding areas.
Year 1/2 Team - Bianca, Gabby, Gillian, Imogen, Janeen, Jamie, Jordan, Marion, Mary, Shalome, Tina and Sue.

Learning Centre Four
Maths
In Maths, students were learning how to estimate, measure and compare the length of everyday items using centimetres, millimetres and metres. Through practical experience, students were exposed to the language of length and were able to use appropriate tools for measuring such rulers and tape measures. Week 3 culminated in a mini Olympics activity that enabled students to use their skills to measure different types of jumping and throwing.
Students also explored finding the area and perimeter of shapes using square units. They were tasked with correctly estimating, measuring and recording the perimeter and area of objects.
Literacy
Over the last two weeks, students enjoyed reading the text, The Monster That Ate Australia. Students explored the text by examining how the characters’ emotions play an important part in telling a story. They were able to speculate about a character using clues in the text. Links were made to our Geography unit in Inquiry by learning about the locations that the main character travelled to around Australia and answering comprehension questions about the text.
Students have also been developing interesting narratives about a fictional Australian creature of their own creation. They have been learning to structure their narratives around their character travelling around Australia to visit some of the landmarks that we have been learning about in Inquiry.
Inquiry
Over the fortnight, students have continued to gather information about their chosen Australian state. They are creating a travel brochure that includes information such as a map, state flag, population, language, climate, major natural and human-made landmarks, flora, fauna and cultural diversity.
Religion
In Religion, students have been learning about services that are provided by and through the Catholic Church. These have included Vinnies, Caritas, Catholic Care. They have created a presentation and/ or an informative text to describe these services. Students have also looked at the role of individuals within the Catholic Church and the contributions they make in its growth. Students also described their connection to the Church and learned about such individuals as Fr Albert, Pope Francis, among others.
Camp
We are very excited for our 3/4 camps coming up in Weeks 6 and 7. The final preparations are well under way. Please find attached here a copy of the parent info presentation to refer to. Within the presentation there is also a handy 'What to pack' list. Remember, if you have any questions about camp, do not hesitate to contact either your child's teacher, John or Bec.
