Principal's Chat
Term 3, Week 4 - Friday 9th August, 2024
Dear Families of OLSC
We have come to the end of another busy week. From all here we wish you a great weekend and enjoy the bursts of sunshine when you can.
Welcome to OLSC:
Anastasia Fairburn
Anastasia has joined our staff this term and is working in the middle level in providing support for the team and providing small group intervention. She has settled into OLSC well and is enjoying the change. Anastasia come the state system and has worked at a number of local schools.
Natasha De Lange
We are all delighted that Natasha will arrive in Australia next week. Natasha will be replacing Sam as she has begun her maternity leave. She is coming to us from the U.S and has experience teaching in China, South Africa and the United States. I thank Kiah for stepping in while Natasha arrives.
This coming Friday many of the Year 6 students will gather to celebrate their Confirmation. This is the sacrament that completes and strengthens the grace received at Baptism. While Baptism initiates a person into the Christian faith, Confirmation deepens this commitment and solidifies one's relationship Church.
Everyone is welcome to come and join this celebration as our Yr 6 students celebrate this milestone event in their faith journe.
If your child is in Year 5 and you plan for them to attend MacKillop in Year 7 in 2026 there are a limited number of days to complete the enrolment process with the college.
Enrolment applications for Year 7, 2026 close on Friday August 16th.
As the weather continues to challenge us with the icy temperatures please look after yourselves and remember to be vigilant about monitoring your child is unwell. Unfortunately we have had some instances of students being sent to school when unwell. The office has required to make calls and have these students collected.
Hand, Foot and Mouth
I know most of you would have seen the recent cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth disease at school. This is a viral infection that causes a rash or blisters on the hands and feet, as well as in or around the mouth. You are required to keep your child away from school while they're feeling too unwell to attend. After contact or exposure children usually come down with symptoms in 3-6 days. Your child can return to school after the fever is gone. Most often, this takes 2 to 3 days. Children with blisters may need to stay home until the blisters dry up.
This year, we're holding a Great Book Swap at OLSC. This is to support the Indigenous
Literacy Foundation (ILF) in providing books and learning resources to children living in remote communities across Australia. The Great Book Swap is a fantastic way to celebrate reading locally, learn more about Indigenous culture, and raise funds for a great cause.
From now until Friday 30th August, students are invited to bring pre-loved children's books (picture books, graphic novels or children's novels) in good condition that they no longer want at home. Each student can bring up to 5 books.
On Wednesday 4th September, bring a gold coin to school to buy a pre-loved book to take home from The Great Book Swap. If you can help set up the book swap on Tuesday 3rd September or help with the sale of books on Wednesday 4th September, please email me at kmorrissey@olscwyn.catholic.edu.au
If you would like to donate to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, please click on this link to visit our school's ILF page: https://edu.greatbookswap.org.au/olscgreatbookswap
This a reminder that the OLSC Book Week parade will be held on the morning of Thursday 22nd August. This is to take place in the school's Sports Hall where we will gather as a whole school at 9 am. We invite families to join us for the parade.
On the day, students may come to school dressed up in a book-related costume or they can choose to wear colourful party clothes to celebrate their love of reading. Alternatively, costumes can also relate to the Book Week theme of 'Reading is Magic'. We ask that students wear sensible footwear with their costumes so they can still play safely at break times.
The Book Fair will be at OLSC throughout this week which is a very exciting time for our staff and students. From Tuesday the 20th to Friday the 23rd of August, families are welcome to visit the Book Fair before and after school to make purchases. Both cash and EFTPOS payments are welcome. The Book Fair will also be open ONLY to the students who bring money, on Friday the 23rd, during break times. They should bring their money in a labelled envelope or zip-lock bag and this can be given to their teachers to look after during the day.

When - Open to families Tuesday to Friday at 8:30 - 8:50 am and 3:15 - 3:35 pm

Kristina (Literacy Leader)
Next Sunday (August 10th) we will once again have a community mass. At this Mass the confirmation student's will be presented with their confirmation certificates. As this mass is not a First Eucharist celebration we will have morning tea following the mass. I thank all of the community who support these parish events.
The Parents and Friends Group have planned an opportunity for the adults in the community to gather. On Friday September 6th we will host a Trivia Night. This is the first adults event that has been planned since the end of the pandemic.
Thanks everyone for a great couple of weeks. At the bottom of the page there are a couple of fliers containing information on sporting opportunities in our local community.
Justin and all of the staff at OLSC
