Year One Team News

with Anna, Zoe, Edan & Claire

Hello Year One families,

The Grade 1 students have settled back into the routine of school quickly and impressively. It was wonderful to see all of their beaming faces as they walked back into school ready and excited to learn for Term 3. We have already had a busy start to the term with Bastille Day and our incursion yesterday! We hope you all enjoyed your holidays and feel well rested coming into the second half of the year!

Bastille Day Photos

Last Thursday we celebrated Bastille Day. It was great to see a wonderful array of French inspired outfits and the energy and enthusiasm the students showed throughout the day. Below are a couple of photos from the day.

Making Chocolate Balls

To support the procedural writing that the students have been doing, we made chocolate balls on Monday! The students learnt about the different requirements of a procedural text and the importance of including details in the method. The students had a lot of fun and were happy to report back that the chocolate balls were delicious. We may have some future chefs in the making!

Incursion - Didgeridoo, Beats and Culture

Yesterday, we enjoyed our incursion with Ganga Giri. As an indigenous man, Ganga shared his knowledge of country and indigenous culture. The students were enthralled by his incredible ability to play the didgeridoo and be able to recognise the sounds of Australian Animals. We also learnt about ochre and its significance and the students loved being able to wear some on their bodies.

Show and Tell - ‘What’s in the Box?’

This term for Show and Tell we will be asking students to place a mystery object inside a small box (provided). They must write three descriptive and interesting clues for the class so that they can guess what the mystery object is. The schedule will be the same as last term’s class pets and we will start at some stage next week.

Take home Monday → return Wednesday

Take home Wednesday → return Friday

Take home Friday → return Monday

Curriculum Focus: Weeks 3-4

Reading: During this term we will be covering stage 7.3 and 7.4 of the Little Learners Love Literacy program. Next week will be revision of all the 7.3 sounds and see us move into stage 7.4 the following week.

Writing: We are looking at procedural writing - including required materials and writing steps in order with precise details.

Numeracy: We will be focusing on repeated addition and forming arrays during week 3. In week 4 we will be looking at money and identifying and ordering Australian coins.

Inquiry:  Our topic this term is around Geography. The past two weeks have seen students learn about Australian states and territories and their capital cities. During the remainder of the term we will be learning about other countries including their geography, cultures and celebrations.

Willy Kids/Respectful Relationships: Our Willy Kids focus is “Willy Kids are Brave". We will be discussing and learning to understand what it means to be brave and what bravery might look like for different people. Our focus for Respectful Relationships this term is “Gender and Identity”. Over the term students will reflect on their identity including their likes, dislikes and strengths. They will develop an awareness of positive and negative gender norms and develop an appreciation of difference.

Warm regards,

The Grade One Team –  Zoe Kitchen & Anna Swan (1K), Edan Bacegga (1B) & Claire Davies (1D)
