Grade 3

Reading This term we have been practising our reading fluency and comprehension during daily reading lessons. In week one we read a recount of Mr. Wilson’s trip to Western Australia and in week two we read “The Bear Who Would Not Share”. Through these texts, we practised our comprehension skills, honing their ability to extract meaning and understand context clues. These experiences have not only enriched their reading abilities but also fostered a greater awareness of how recount texts are structured and how time connectives are used.Writing This term, we’ve been exploring the exciting world of recount writing! Recounts are stories where you tell about something that happened in the past. You all have done a fantastic job, and we can’t wait to share some of the highlights with you!

What is Recount Writing?

Recount writing is like a fun diary entry or a report where you tell about an event or an experience. It’s a way to share what happened, when it happened, and who was there. Here are the key parts of a great recount:

A Beginning - Start with a catchy introduction that tells your readers what you are going to recount. This can be a question or a short sentence that grabs attention!

Details - Include lots of interesting details. Describe what happened, where it happened, and who was there. Use words that make your story come alive!

Sequence of Events - Make sure your recount flows in the order that things happened. Use words like first, next, then, and finally to show the sequence.

Feelings - Share your thoughts and feelings about the event. How did you feel? What was the best part? Let your readers see the story through your eyes!

A Conclusion - End with a great conclusion that wraps up your story. You can share what you learned or how you felt at the end of the event.

Maths

In Grade 3 math, we've had a fantastic time revisiting and building our confidence with place value and vertical addition and subtraction, especially focusing on carrying and borrowing. We also embarked on an exciting journey into the world of fractions, representing them as shapes, collections, and numbers. Over three days, we enjoyed hands-on activities to reinforce these concepts. Additionally, we practiced reading analog clocks to the minute, sharpening our time-telling skills. It's been a fun and engaging week full of learning and discovery!

Spelling

We have started a new spelling program in Grade 3, SpellEx. Students have been enjoying adding prefixes and suffixes to words and looking at the long and short vowel sounds.

Integrated

We have finished up our Geography unit by creating maps using scales, legends and keys. Students created pictorial maps of Grayling Primary School using images to represent different spaces.
