NAIDOC Week 2024
National NAIDOC Week is a time to celebrate and recognize the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The week is an opportunity to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest continuous living cultures on earth.
During Greater Shepparton Secondary College's NAIDOC Celebrations, held during the last week of Term 2, students had the chance to participate in a variety of daily activities. These included beading, basket weaving, painting, drawing, and necklace making. One of the highlights of the week was the famous Staff vs. Student Buroinjin game, which saw the staff take the victory once again.
The week ended with an afternoon tea and a smoking ceremony with local elders, before heading into the gym for the assembly. The assembly featured our recent sports awards and special words from our guest speaker, Tracy Hardie. Tracy spoke on this year's NAIDOC theme and shared her own experiences.
The assembly also announcement of the 2024 Deadly Student Award winners. These awards are given to students nominated by their peers for showing the GSSC values, demonstrating a positive attitude towards learning, and fully engaging in classroom activities. This year's deserving recipients were Bridget Cooper, Lachlan Gribble, Leon Dixon, Jazmin Mathers, Izabella Atkinson, and Rihanna Ward. Congratulations to these outstanding students!
The assembly also showcased a performance by Nate Traianidis and his band, as well as captivating dances from our First Nations students.
