All systems go for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!
The stage is set, the musical instruments are tuned, and the talented cast, crew and musicians are well rehearsed. It must be show time!
The curtain rises on our 2024 Senior production, Roald Dahl's Charlie the Chocolate Factory tomorrow night (Thursday 1 August), and excitement is building around the College as we wait in eager anticipation for the Playhouse Theatre to be transformed into Willy Wonka's magical chocolate factory.
The cast of 31 Senior School students, together with the music band and a very capable student crew, have been working exceptionally hard over the past two terms to bring this musical to life. The end result is a testament to their remarkable dedication and exceptional talent.
With quirky characters, moral lessons, vibrant costumes and, of course, mouth-watering sweets, audiences are in for a delicious treat! Break a leg to all our performers!

The production will be showing at The Playhouse Theatre for four performances from Thursday 1 August to Saturday 3 August. Duration is 2.5 hours plus a 20-minute intermission.
Official opening and blessing of Murphy's Café outdoor seating area
On Tuesday 24 July, the St Mary’s College community celebrated the blessing and official opening of our new Murphy’s Café outdoor seating area.
We were privileged to be joined on this occasion by a number of special guests from Catholic schools across Tasmania, with Father Bernard Perera blessing the space and leading us all in prayer.
This new sheltered space will provide a beautiful outdoor environment for our students and staff to enjoy, maximising opportunities for dining, socialising and relaxing ‘al fresco’ without exposure to the elements.
We all agree that the modern design, which incorporates wooden tables, benches and seating made from sustainable materials, has enhanced the College Green.
It has been wonderful seeing students and staff enjoying this vibrant space together, and we are particularly excited to take advantage of the deck during the upcoming warmer months!
The College offers its thanks and gratitude to everyone who has played a part in bringing this space to life, in particular, our talented Property Services Manager, Barry Figgel and his Maintenance team, whose hard work and dedication was the driving force behind this project’s success.
Olympic fever hits SMC
Olympic fever has swept through St Mary's College this past week, with the global phenomenon inspiring students to achieve their personal best both on and off the field and in the classroom.
To capture some of the spirit and excitement of the 2024 Paris Olympics, and to tap into our students' passion for sport, the College officially launched the '2024 SMC Olympics' with an Opening Ceremony on Monday 29 July attended by students from Kinder to Year 12.
This House-based competition (of international prestige) will see senior students take to the worldwide arena as they represent their nominated country and participate in a roster of activities in exchange for vital House points.
As our Australian Olympians compete on the world stage, our budding athletes at SMC wil also be putting their best foot forward in a tug of war, indoor hockey, a modified version of the decathlon and a staff versus student soccer match.
To further ignite our students' national pride, a Green and Gold Day will be held on Friday 9 August, inviting all students to dress in our country's colours for a gold coin donation.
The Olympics are also a topic of conversation in the College Meeting Place, where First Nations students are researching Australia's First Nations Olympians, linking each athlete to their place of origin and exploring their cultural ties.
For students and staff interested in keeping up to speed with all the latest action live from Paris, the Games will be streaming every lunchtime in the Mary Morgan Wing (S308/9).
