Upper Primary Term 1

Digital Tech

The Upper Primary students have been improving their iPad and typing skills while using the Apple pencils and wired keyboards.

We have also been talking about the expectations on our ICT Agreement and what that looks like when using technology. Students have completed interactive worksheets and discussed the difference between hardware and software.

Students are compiling screenshots of their work into a book about their learning. They love coming to the Discovery Centre to use technology in a purposeful and fun way!

Music

The Upper Primary students have been completing workshops on all instruments in the music room this term.  These include keyboards, guitars, drums and vocals.  Students have also been working on ensemble playing and rehearsing some simple chord progressions.

PE

Students in Upper Primary have enjoyed learning about different fundamental motor skills as part of the P.E. program this term. They enjoyed practising their locomotor skills (walk, run, jump, hop and skip) during closed environment skill stations and while playing various modified games. Students practised following instructions to learn the rules of common running and dodging games.

Social Competencies

The Upper Primary student cohort spent several weeks revisiting the Concord School Students Expectations; Be a Learner, Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful, developing a better understanding of what they need from their learning environment, their peers and themselves, to be the best learners they can be. They implemented some useful strategies, such as guided meditation, to support being ready to learn at the beginning of each social competency class and to conclude the class, students share a positive affirmation about themselves in relation to their learning.

Upper Primary students have started their Drug Education unit, a safety topic that will continue into Term 2, has expanded students' understanding of the distinction between food and non food items and the effects on the body. They identified common dangerous household substances and their locations at home and school and explored safety warning symbols, their meanings and how to be safe around these substances. They will explore the difference between drugs and medicine, including over the counter and prescription medicine and develop an understanding that medicine labels contain important information to help keep users safe. This unit emphasizes recognizing whether something is dangerous and highlights the importance of seeking support from a trusted adult to stay safe.

Visual Arts

Our Art program focused on exploring identity through various artistic expressions. Students engaged in self-reflective tasks and completed mini projects such as self-portraits and name-based artworks. Additionally, they created directional pieces that shared personal stories. Students engaged in ‘gallery walks’ and gave feedback on the art work of their peers.
