From Leadership

Dear parents and carers,

With the traditionally hot weather of Term 1, we have measures in place to ensure both safety and comfort of students through the day and particularly during recess and lunchtime. When the temperature is in the mid to high 30’s, we restrict outside play with shortened lunch breaks and inside activities.

At other times, during recess and lunch, we have noticed quite a lot of students without hats. While there is plenty of shade in the school provided by trees and shade sails, it is still critically important that students are wearing sun safe hats while outside.  According to the Cancer Council,

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation damage accumulated during childhood and adolescence is strongly associated with an increased risk of skin cancer later in life. Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, with two in three Australians developing some form of skin cancer before age 70. Skin cancer is one of the most preventable cancers

I have a very personal experience of this with my wife, Rebecca, last year being diagnosed with stage 4 metastasised melanoma in the brain. Rebecca never sought the sun. As an adult, she avoided it and covered up whenever outside, however the damage was done when she was young.

Please ensure that your children have a suitable hat with them each day.
