On Friday, 14th February, we gathered as a school community to celebrate our Opening Mass, marking the official opening of the academic year. During this special occasion, the Dux of the College for 2024 was awarded, our new student leaders were officially inducted, the new students were welcomed, and our Year 12s were presented with a senior badge and given a blessing for their final year of schooling. The ceremony ended with a spirited rendition of Trust in the Lord, led by the incomparable Liturgy Band. I particularly enjoyed seeing the past students who were present, belting it out alongside current students.
I would like to commend our Student Agency Team, who were inducted at this Mass, for their outstanding participation in the Leadership Formation Retreat. They have already shown such thoughtful and intentional leadership and embodiment of our College Values of faith, service and courage. Additionally, their representation at the Open Evening last week was exemplary, showcasing the spirit and commitment of our students.
Roses for Rosies
Also on Friday, 14th February, the College celebrated St Valentine’s Day with the Roses for Rosies initiative. Led by our Mission Captains in support of Rosies Friends on the Street, roses with affirmations were gifted to friends throughout the school, spreading the spirit of friendship and kindness. The success of the fundraiser also highlighted the compassion and generosity of our school community.
Invitation for Sacrament Preparation
Sacraments are sacred rites of initiation and commitment in the Catholic Church, and they hold profound spiritual significance. They can be markers of significant life moments as well as welcoming into the community. We can offer preparation for the sacraments here at school. If any student is interested in this, please contact me (jsugars2@cns.catholic.edu.au).
Music at St Thomas’s Mass
St Thomas's Parish invites students from our school to participate in providing music for Mass on the 5th Sunday of the month, the first one being 30th March. This is a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with musicians from St Thomas's Primary School and contribute to parish worship. Practices will begin this Wednesday from 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm. Interested students should contact Rebecca Dempster (rdempster@cns.catholic.edu.au) or Selena Dyer (sdyer@cns.catholic.edu.au).
On a personal note, I wish to extend a warm welcome to all of our new families. I hope you find the community at St Stephen’s, as I have, to be a special one, holding together through both times of celebration and hardship. Catholic schools can offer significant support to families facing difficulties and I encourage families to reach out to the College and let us know how we can assist you or another family in need. And to our returning families, thank you for your continued support and participation in our school community. I wish you all the best for this coming school year.
Regards,
Janai Sugars
