Prep - Mrs Guy

We have had a very good fortnight in our room, learning more about ourselves as learners and each other, school expectations and the curriculum. In English students have continued to work their way through the alphabet, learning the name of letters and their most common sounds. We have then been stringing sounds together to read words, such as cat, hat, cap, ham with letters and sounds we have learnt. We have continued learning how to form or write these letters and words. Students have also started learning about 'heart' words which are words that are difficult to decode. This week we have learnt about the words my, the and I, which were sent home on Monday in students' diaries. Hopefully you are having fun  helping your child read and maybe even spell their heart words which were sent home on Monday. Students have been telling me they are having fun at home with these words on the bathroom mirror, the fridge and even on the ceiling above the bed! Please remember to sign your child's diary every time they 'read; to you for our Reading Nights Competition.

In Numeracy we have continued our work with numbers to 10, reading the numbers, writing the numbers, counting forwards, backwards and reading number words to match, such as one, two and three as examples. We have also learnt about ordinal number to 10th and how to order numbers such as 3, 7, 9 and 1 from the smallest to the largest numbers.

ROAR

Students enjoyed learning about their bodies and consent in our ROAR session on Tuesday. Hopefully their 'safe' hand is somewhere prominent in your home to discuss what they learnt and who to talk to if they are ever worried.

Prep Guy Students Of The Week

This week our student achievers are Heath and Elsie. Heath was chosen for showing respect to his friends by always checking in with them and helping out myself and other students in the classroom and in the yard. Well done Heath; we love having you in our classroom.

Elsie was chosen for also showing respect to students in the classroom and outside at play times. Elsie looks after her friends by helping them to feel happy and safe. Elsie you have such a beautiful soul.

Well done Heath and Elsie; Prep Guy are super duper proud of you both.

Prep/ 1 - Miss Stoll

Week 4 and 5 have been wonderful in Prep and Grade One!

We are learning about being a Respectful Rabbit - "Treating others the way you want to be treated", Responsible Rhino - "Doing the right thing and being trustworthy" and Resilient Racoon - "The power to bounce back". Each students collects tokens for demonstrating these values or showing respect, responsibility and/ or resilience and can save or spend these tokens at our Token Shop.

In Phonics and English, we have learnt about letters, sounds, letter formation and drawing and/ or writing and labelling pictures about our focus sounds. Over the last two weeks me met Bb (Ben Bear), Hh (Harry Hippopotamus), Nn (Nelly Numbat), Oo (Oscar octopus), Dd (Daisy dog), Gg (Gabby goat), Ll (Leo Lion) and Vv (Vicky vulture). We love reading Milo's Birthday Surprise are so excited to see how the rest of the story unfolds as be continue exploring the letters of the alphabet. Whilst learning about new sounds, we have practiced writing the letters during rainbow writing sessions, where students trace the upper and lower case focus letter. Students have explored words that begin with these sounds, and extended this learning into writing sentences for our Grade Ones. Prep students were sent home with our Stage 1 and 2 Heart Words earlier this week, these will also be included in your child's 'Sounds Folder' in the coming weeks. I will email families about this closer to them coming home. We are also exploring these words at school, as well as beginning to decode, read, spell and write words linked to our learnt sounds. Our Grade Ones are being extended to explore different ways to read and write these sounds, such as Gg for Gabby goat, these students sorted 'g' and 'gg' words, or Oo for Oscar octopus, these students sorted 'ow' and 'oa' words.

In Maths, we have begun exploring place value by investigating numbers six (6) to 10 (ten). We have used various materials, such as MAB blocks, Unifix coloured blocks, drawings, natural resources and number formation activities to strengthen our understanding of these numbers. We have been counting up and back from these numbers, what comes before and after, if they are an "even Steven" or "odd Todd" number and have begun looking at our hundreds chart to explore counting up from zero and skip counting by tens. Our Grade Ones are strengthening their ability to read and write these numbers in the worded form.

Your students passwords for Reading Eggs, Mathletics, Essential Assessment and epic will be sent home within the next week. We are still learning how to safely and independently log into and navigate these sites at school.

Our Student Achievers this fortnight are Lexi and Myron. Lexi embraces each day with a smile and positive attitude, choosing to demonstrate kindness and resilience during learning and play times. I can always count on Lexi to include, help or support others and she truly is such a wonderful role-model for our class and school as a motivated, hard-working and caring friend and learner. Myron continues to surprise me, always going above and beyond to help his peers and teachers in our classroom and across our school. Myron believes in doing the right thing the first time and demonstrates bravery when standing up for what is right, particularly in social interactions. I can always count on Myron to help make our classroom feel safe, kind and calm. Keep up the incredible work Lexi and Myron. To all my creative, smart, kind and inspiring students, keep working hard and believing in yourself, I am so incredibly proud of all of you.

Lexi and Myron will receive their Student Achiever awards at Assembly in Week 6, assembly starts at 3:10pm.

Please ensure all forms that have been sent home are returned to school if they haven't already. Our students absolutely loved Kids Roar. We got to discuss consent, safe and unsafe scenarios and our bodies in an age appropriate way. Your child should have/ or will be bringing home their 'Safety Hand' and "Unsafe Signs' activity this week. Please ensure your child's 'Safety Hand' is on display somewhere prominent in your home and encourage your child to talk about their 'Safe People' so as they always know who to go to if they should ever feel they needOn Tuesday the 4th of March, we have our school photos. Towards the end of the term on Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th of March, we will hold Parent/ Teacher chats. Please check our 'Important Dates' section on our newsletter in the future so as to keep up to date with upcoming events for your child.

1/2 - Mrs Murphy

We have been super busy in 1/2M over the last two weeks we have been learning about our emotions and what zone we are in. We do regular check-ins, in the class, to see how each student is feeling throughout the day.

Our Learning

In Reading, we focus on a new book each week. We have looked at the books "Giraffes cant Dance" and " Run like a Rabbit"  students have learnt new vocabulary words, and how to comprehend the story and express their thoughts about the text they have been listening too.

Students have all been sent home with EPIC logins, where you can access books for FREE.

In Writing we have been learning about Nouns and Verbs, students are learning that we need to have a noun in our sentence (Person, Place, Thing or Animal) and a verb (Action or Doing word). Students have enjoyed making their Verb Monsters.

In Numeracy we are still looking at Place Value and all about digits and what it means. We have been focusing on one's, ten's and hundred's and to make sure they go in the correct column, we have been using MAB Blocks and our whiteboards to help with our learning. We have started to create our Place Value City in the classroom.

Last week's Student Achiever was Charlie for showing respect in the classroom, being an amazing learner and a wonderful friend to her classmates. Well Done Charlie!
