Senior School News Yr 5/6

Recently our Year 6 students embarked on an epic journey to Canberra, Australia’s capital city. The trip had everything—education and excitement. The adventure began with a nine-hour bus ride featuring three stops for food and bathroom breaks. Despite this, students still managed to ask, “When’s our next stop?” a mere 15 minutes after each one. We arrived at 5pm on Monday and the biggest excitement of the day was discovering who got to bunk together in the cabins.

Tuesday kicked off with a whirlwind of activities. We visited Old Parliament House, took a scenic (and slightly exhausting) walk around the lake, and toured New Parliament House, where students got to role-play as politicians. Some students took their roles very seriously—maybe a little too seriously. By the time we wrapped up with a visit to the Observatory on Mount Stromlo, exhaustion had set in, and the kids...and teachers, were ready to collapse into their beds.

Wednesday was packed with gallery visits, but the highlight of the day was The Mint. Watching coins being made and sorted right before our eyes was mesmerising, and the excitement was through the roof when students got to mint their own coins. We ended the day with an orienteering activity that gave the students the freedom to run wild—and, surprisingly, we didn’t lose a single one!

On our final day, we continued exploring galleries before heading to the National Film and Sound Archive. We saw some really cool footage of Australian films. But the best was saved for last—Questacon! This enormous science and technology playground had everyone, including the adults, completely hooked. Between the Free-Fall Slide, the Earthquake Simulator, and all the hands-on experiments, it was the perfect way to end the trip.

The students were incredibly well-behaved, and we can honestly say that everyone had an amazing time. We are so proud of them and can’t wait for our next adventure—though maybe with a slightly shorter bus ride!

Kind regards
