BJR/AGTV German Exchange Program – Student Experiences!

Finn H – Year 11

Hi, I’m Finn and last year I had the incredible opportunity to take part in an exchange program in Bavaria, Germany, and it’s an experience I’ll never forget. For 3 months, I lived with a host family, went to school, and saw first-hand what it’s like to live in Germany, experiencing a new part of the culture every day.

During the exchange, I was also able to teach my exchange partner the ins and outs of Australian culture during his stay in Victoria with my family and me, which occurred before my stay in Germany. This gave me the advantage of getting to know him before it was my turn to stay with his family.

Upon arriving in Germany I was struck with how beautiful it was - from the lively Christmas markets in the city or the winter landscape of my host family’s backyard - it made me feel as if I was living in a postcard. Living with my host family only made my experience better, as they instantly made me feel as if I were the fifth member of their family. Through living with my host family I established a closer connection to Germany, a connection that I would not have had if I visited as a tourist.

Looking back on my experience, I realise that the exchange had not only helped improve my German skills but also helped me grow as a person, making me a happier more confident person.

Matthew P – Year 11

Hallo! My name is Matthew, I’m 16 years old and I was lucky enough to take part in the BJR/AGTV German Exchange. During my exchange, I spent two months in Nuremberg and a week in Berlin, immersing myself in the culture, language, and daily life. In Nuremberg, I lived with a host family, attended school, and explored the city's history, including the medieval castle. I experienced German traditions, tasted local cuisine, and improved my language skills through daily interactions.

My week in Berlin was a lot of museums, historic sites, and city life, from the Brandenburg Gate to the Berlin Wall. The experience was amazing, and I created lasting friendships. It’s not just helpful for language skills but to also see a new part of the world and gain a new perspective.
