International Womens Day

Throughout the school this week students have been introduced to International Women’s Day. International Women’s Day, or IWD, is a global event dedicated to celebrating the achievements of women around the world. It is also an important opportunity to reflect on ways to improve women’s lives around the globe and a day for everyone to stand up for gender equality. IWD is celebrated globally on the 8th of March every year.
The theme for IWD 2025 is: Accelerate Action. This theme focuses on speeding up women’s equality. The IWD website states, that at the current rate of progress, it will take 134 years to reach full gender equality, globally. This year’s theme aims to build greater ambition to reach full equality.
The Year 5 and 6 students are currently reading a class novel titled ‘Boy Overboard’ written by Morris Gleitzman. This story deals with issues of a family fleeing Afghanistan as refugees with the hope of coming to Australia. This week students have focused on the theme of women’s rights and freedoms in Afghanistan and made comparisons to the rights and freedoms of girls and women in Australia. Class discussions have been lively, and students have enjoyed learning about some vast differences between the two countries, especially around gender equality.
Year 3 and 4 considered why it is important to acknowledge and celebrate International Women’s Day. They identified women in their lives that they look up to and celebrated their achievements.
Students in Year 1 and 2 learnt about what International Women’s Day means and completed an activity that honoured a special woman in their lives. They thought about: What they're good at and her characteristics, amongst other things. Some students had the opportunity to write a letter to their special woman and communicate these things in their own words. It was lovely to hear that mum’s and grandmothers featured!
In Prep, students have read some of the books from the ‘Little People, BIG DREAMS’ series. They have heard the story of the resilience and hard work of Taylor Swift’s rise to singing superstar amongst others.
