Year 5 News

Jam-Packed In Year 5!!

Wow, what a whirlwind it’s been in Year 5! With just over two weeks left until the end of term, we’ve been busier than ever. From end-of-year assessments to leadership applications, bike checks, and excursions, there’s been no shortage of learning and fun. Let’s take a look at what we’ve been up to these past couple of weeks!

Beaumaris Secondary Experience Day

The highlight for many was our walk down to Beaumaris Secondary College, where our students got a sneak peek at life in high school. They participated in a day packed with activities designed to mirror the secondary school experience. From navigating new classrooms to trying out engaging lessons, the students left feeling a mix of excitement and curiosity about what lies ahead.

SCIENCE: The Magic of Chemistry

Under the guidance of Steve, our budding scientists explored the fascinating world of acids and bases using indicator liquid made from red cabbage. Watching substances transform into vibrant colours as they tested their acidity, or alkalinity was nothing short of magical! Using a pH chart, students determined whether the liquids were acidic, basic, or neutral—sparking endless questions and curiosity about the chemistry around us.

Innovate Lesson: LEGO Engineering Fun

In Ella’s Innovate class, students embraced the Design Thinking process to create contraptions that propelled Harry, the LEGO figurine, forward. Armed with materials and plenty of teamwork, groups brainstormed, built, and tested their ideas. Success wasn’t just measured by how far Harry travelled but by how well students collaborated and communicated.

Cooking Lesson: Pizza Muffin Masterclass

Cooking up a storm with Karlie, Trish, and Anne, our students learned to make delicious pizza muffins while mastering kitchen safety and hygiene. They worked in pairs, tied their hair back, donned aprons, and washed their hands like pros. The smell of melted cheese and fresh ingredients filled the air as they practiced listening and working together—a recipe for success in more ways than one!

Healthy Lifestyles Day

A day of active fun and fitness had everyone moving and laughing. With Joel leading Chook Ball, Tom orchestrating Capture the Chicken, and Liam running multi-sport games, there was something for everyone to enjoy. Students tried their hand at different sports, honed their teamwork skills, and finished the day feeling energized and inspired to stay active.

School Concert: A Night to Remember

Our Year 5 stars shone brightly at the school concert! Performing “Kung Fu Fighting” from Kung Fu Panda and “You Can’t Stop the Beat” from Hairspray, they brought energy, rhythm, and joy to the stage. Weeks of rehearsals paid off as they sang and danced their hearts out, earning applause from a packed audience. What a night!

Melbourne Zoo Excursion

Our trip to the Melbourne Zoo was both educational and eye-opening. Students explored the structural and behavioural adaptations of animals like the bear, seal, mountain lion, and peccary. They investigated the habitats and diets of these creatures, discussed reasons for animal extinction, and considered the role of zoos in conservation.

The zoo’s strong welfare code left a lasting impression, reminding students of our responsibility to protect wildlife.

Looking Ahead

As we approach the end of a truly incredible year, there’s still so much to look forward to in these final weeks. Students are busy putting the finishing touches on their leadership applications for Grade 6—a process that has encouraged them to reflect on their strengths, responsibilities, and goals for the future. We’re also wrapping up our learning tasks and assessments, celebrating the growth and effort every student has shown throughout the year.

The end of the year is always bittersweet for us as Year 5 teachers. Watching our students grow, learn, and challenge themselves has been a privilege, and we are so proud of each and every one of them. It’s been a year filled with laughter, curiosity, resilience, and achievement. As they prepare to step into Grade 6, we know they’ll continue to shine and take on new challenges with confidence and determination.

Finally, we’d like to extend our warmest wishes to all of our families for the upcoming holiday season. We hope your Christmas and New Year are filled with love, laughter, and time to connect with the people who matter most. Whether you’re staying local or heading off on an adventure, may your break be restful, joyous, and full of wonderful memories.

Thank you for being such a supportive and engaged community throughout the year. We’ve loved being a part of your children’s learning journeys, and we can’t wait to hear about all the exciting things they’ll achieve in the future.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us in Year 5!

Warmest regards,

The Year 5 Teaching Team
